We have had lots of conversations on that topic on this thread.
Now that I have been here a while I have experienced Southern Hostility.
However, I understand why these individuals feel this way, coming from Long Island, an area which has been transformed in my lifetime.
When I encounter a clearly artificial smile, I return it, and then I just shake it off and move on.
There are tons of good people here from NC and all over the world.

True! I've encountered the phony smile and the not-so-phony cold shoulder. But just like NYer, I return the favor.
You're certainly going to meet people who will judge you no matter what you do or say. If that bothers you, you won't be comfortable here.
On the other hand, the people who are open-minded and kind are the nicest you'll meet.
It's funny, all these Northerners are supposed to be here (I know they are), but all the new friends I've made are Southern. I don't think I've even spoken to a fellow Yankee down here. So, the good people are here. You just have to take the good with the bad, like every where else.

We have the reverse situation in Wake Forest, there are more people from places other than NC here, perhaps the thousands at the seminary tip the balance!
BTW,
I DO like the new name, NC Mom- > Ms Charlotte!

As I said, many people overcompensate for what they didn't like and wind up unhappy and making everyone around them unhappy with their carping because they were so busy concentrating on the bad things they wanted to leave behind, they forgot to look for the things in the new spot that have always made them happy.

I did that, but did it backwards and came up with a similar result. I like NC, I'm an Ohioan who's always had a bit of "Southern" in him.
What do I like about Ohio? (For the most part) traditional values, change of seasons, affordable housing, good place to raise a family.
The area of North Carolina I'm interested in meets those qualities, too.

The point the poster was making is that if you think everything about where you live now sucks, then you'll be miserable anywhere you go.

Accepted. I owe you one too. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about you not being familiar with the state. I'm sorry.

That isn't unique to this state or to the south. In fact, I've read threads on other state boards where the natives don't like Californians moving in, New Englanders who don't like New Yorkers moving in, or maybe it's New Jerseyites moving in. I've forgotten. The same or a similar theme seems to occur in a lot of states that are undergoing a large influx of newcomers.
I don't think in terms of Yankee vs. Southerner - it's pretty much a foreign concept to me. I haven't encountered any southern hostility and if people are talking about me behind my back (as if that's isolated to the South! ) I don't know about it, so it makes no never mind to me. As much as many people say they like directness over southern politeness, if you are direct, then they think you're rude. (general you - not you specifically)
We have friends who were born and raised here and have lived here all of their lives, friends who are longterm transplants from other areas, (out of staters) friends who are more recent transplants. I've met more out of staters in Greensboro than I have natives. My husband's job means just the opposite- he meets more natives than out of staters. If he's talked about behind his back he doesn't know it either.
I'm not aware of any idyllic state where all the people are near perfect but if there is one I ain't movin' there because I sure wouldn't fit in.
Regards,
Cassie
