Missing the green..no more Tucson
In the process of possible relocation to NC, Winston Salem area...we came to Tucson several years ago from Northern Virginia. Thinking the cost of living would be attractive and purchased a new home just before the big RE boom. Since we got in so cheap...we did upgrades and the works thinking in three years we would have a nice nest egg to almost pay cash for a place...well the market and the get rich quick investors have really hurt the housing prices here...looks pretty sad. There are tons of vacant new homes, the market has gone bust. So we need to find a more reasonable place to purchase our final resting home that we can afford when I retire...in a year or so. My friend told me that the dollars we will get here will go far in NC and the weather is milder than most eastern areas...Any comments on Winston Salem? Love to here them...thanks....Oh does it snow there just a little? That will work fine...:

I may have posted this before, but it fits here. This is an old Zen proverb:
An old man was sitting at the entrance of a town. A man came by and asked the old man,
"What are the people like in this town?"
The old man asked him, "What were they like in the town you came from?"
The visitor responded, "They were mean, rude and nasty!"
The old man replied, "Well, that is what you will find here."
Another visitor came by later that day and asked the old man the same question, "What are the people like in this town?"
Again, the old man asked, "What were they like in the town you came from?"
The second visitor responded, "Oh they were wonderful! So nice, friendly and helpful!"
The old man replied, "Well, that is what you will find here."
It's all about attitude, and it starts from inside of us!

If you are from NC than I look forward to my move there for it is people like you that make any place wonderful to be in!

I used to live in Winston-Salem MANY years ago, and it's possible that I'll be back in NC someday. I'm not there yet, Miss J, but I thank you for your kind words and wish you much happiness in your new home. Maybe our paths will cross someday!

Coastal states got blasted by hurricaines. Property tax and even more of a problem insurance rates prompted many to relocate to area that is more reasonable. I love the area outside of Asheville, but for me, weather too cold in winter. Prices on homes elevated due to the # moving north in last couple of years.

Life in Raleigh is certainly good!
There are many reasons why we consistently makes the “Top Ten” lists in Forbes, Money and other publications. We are among the top ten places in the U.S. to live, do business and retire. No it is not "the big city" and those who love that life will not find it here. We have enough people to support good shopping and services (We have a Saks, for pity's sake!) but this is a collection of small towns, not one big city, so we much of the retain the small town feel and friendliness.
Downside: not much public transportation or areas where you can walk to services.
Upside:
*Plentiful good jobs
*Top notch public (Wake County has consistently high ratings nationally)
and private schools, including numerous colleges and universities (Duke,
UNC North Carolina State and 8 others)
*Excellent medical facilities everywhere, not to mention Duke and UNC
Medical Schools
*Close to beach, close to mountains, several large lakes
*Great four-season weather, lots of variety and none too extreme
*One of the least expensive and most convenient airports to fly from
Can make day trips via air to cities from New York to Florida
*Excellent cultural events including world-class ballet
*Year-round community and university activities for all ages, many of which
are free or very inexpensive
*Great museums, restaurants and clubs
*Outstanding golf, etc. almost every day of the year
(Did I mention sports?)
*Great variety of beautiful housing and neighborhoods
*Average cost of living

Check the stats
Sorry if you have had a problem here. Perhaps you should check the statistics for area employment and pay scales and for the results of testing and college entry from public schools. You are fortunately in a very small minority. Perhaps some of that schooling could help you get into the job market.

No thanks.
I finished my undergrad and grad work a while ago. And I have a good paying job... not in NC.
