I'm so glad I'm not self-employed any longer. Earlier this year when I was, I was perfectly happy with a $10K deductible catastrophic plan for less than $100/month. In 2014 I'd no longer be eligible for that (not under 30), and be stuck paying something along the lines of what you were quoted. Unless you make so little that you qualify for subsidies, you will see big increases.

Obamacare never addressed the real problem. Which is the world leading cost of healthcare in the US. Instead it offers subsidies from people with insurance through much higher premiums and also taxpayer subsidies. It protected big pharma, insurance companies ,providers etc.

Supply of healthcare is limited at every turn in the US. Obamacare is nothing more than funneling more money into it.

In NC, anyway. States with exchanges and competition are not seeing these huge increases. We have our state govt. to thank.

Mine went up 40 bucks? I have been paying for health insurance for 20 + years it is always going up. Much to do about nothing. This has nothing to do with Affordable health care this has to do with charging us.

Well, part of the problem is you're no longer able to opt out of maternity coverage. That's not an NC thing. That alone adds at least $100/month. Also, not being able to buy catastrophic coverage over age 30 is not just in NC - that's Obamacare.

Well. I agree that one should be able to opt out of maternity coverage. Especially over age 35.

At least at 35 you could still get pregnant.. but paying for maternity coverage over age 50? Ridiculous!

[quote=NorasMom;31641070]I'll reply.

If we had more insurers participating, there would have been more competition, and lower rates.

Here's a business lesson for you. Businesses like insurers, don't want to be a part of a loosing business model. That can't earn profits from heavy government regulations now in effect. Physician's are retiring early because they do not want to be a part of this mess - I can't blame them. McCrory is not the one to blame here. Your democrats at the Federal level, including some stupid Republicans, endorsed this foolish law that is destroying all of us. Want to blame someone, start with these people.

The competition you are referring in lower rates for ie; gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores and all of the above does not work anymore in the healthcare industry. Obamacare is destroying all of this to achieve a socialistic healthcare system. Like Germany and Canada - its does not work well in these countries. People have months/years waits to see doctors.

We had the greatest healthcare system and most advanced technologies in the world. That's ended and here comes the "CHANGE" all the liberals wanted. Regulating healthcare is not allowing our free enterprise system work and the government can't run a business. Look at the Postal system. Everything our leaders touch, turns to Sh..!

OBAMACARE is another Terd!

People forget that competition is all but eliminated by laws. Greatly limiting supply. All Obamacare does is give the healthcare monopoly more money. Does zero to control costs.

Not true based on the screenshots I saw yesterday when the signup website was working. Every state with an exchange saw an increase in premiums, and with most of the plans you have to pay 40% of out of pocket costs.

The issue is not insurance, it is paying for medical services.
