Seems that many ppl are enjoying their 1920's Craftsman Bungalow in North Carolina.
We are in the foot hills in North Carolina not far from Lake Lure.
Does anyone know about the wormy chestnut floors? We have the original in ours. A contractor who assisted my husband with work on the property offered him 40K for the floors.
My favorite part of the Craftsman is the butler's pantry!
Plaza-Midwood, Charlotte, NC 3 miles from uptown. $500k+
Dilworth, Charlotte, NC 2 miles from uptown. $1mil+
I agree, Plaze-Midwood has about the best collection of charming bungalows in the Charlotte area. I myself love seeing block after block of bungalows with the trademark tapered porch columns and low slung roofs. Myers Park is very nice but most homes there are of an earlier or larger design than that of a Craftsmen, and I'm not sure I would call most of Dilworth "bungalows".
Either way, there are many neighborhoods around uptown charlotte with the home you are looking for, in a wide range of price and quality of living. Many neighborehoods are going re-investment and gentrification, so you might want to speak with a realtor about up and coming areas if you are the urban pioneer type.
If I could pursure it, my goal as a craftsmen lover would be to look in smaller towns for a home, even if they lie just outside of a metro city like Charlotte or Raleigh. You could be in a home you love but with more of a "Main street USA" type vibe if you dig that sort of thing. I know I do. Good luck to you.
Glad to hear you agree about the woodwork, Tom. Part of ours is original (like the giant oak pocket door that leads into the library) and the rest has all been done by my husband, a cabinet and furniture maker. We just finished the kitchen (I'm passing out from floor varnish as I write) ... beautiful!
I have applied for grad school in fall of 2007, which is why we may be having to move. All up in the air right now. I'm trying six ways from Sunday to figure out how I can be in grad school in Winston-Salem (1 1/2 hours away) and still live here... Not bloody likely. Check in with me in a couple of months if you're still interested!
Craftsman style homes are very popular and as such they are usually pricey. Between over valuation and repairs I would question their value as an investment.
Can anyone recommend a good Craftsman/bungalow realtor who specializes in these homes in the Raleigh or Charlotte areas? Thanks!
