My husband and I are looking to relocate to North Carolina from Arizona. The move will be a huge shock to us as we have only ever lived in Arizona, but we are looking for a big change. We are looking for a small town feel with a larger city within close proximity for job or shopping reasons. We have two children, 4 and 1 so we are interested in a town with a good school district. Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Well, start applying for jobs and see what choices you might have to pick among.
One may actually meet your desire.

Don't pack up and move without at least one good paying job lined up first.

eta: changed LINK to correct one

We don't plan on moving until we have jobs in line and feel we have done our research that is why I came here hoping someone could give us some useful information.

And the link you attached was unnecessary...don't assume just because we are from Arizona that we are Hispanic..

What are you hoping to achieve with your relocation?

We moved from Phoenix metro to Raleigh in June 2012. No kids - we are younger retirees. I'm happy to answer specific questions.

But I must agree that moving without at least one job is irresponsible, especially with kids. So I'd start by asking about the kind of jobs and industries you would be looking for.

Secondly, I can assure you that the COL in NC is higher than AZ (yes, a big generalization, but true in most situations). Again, I can provide specifics if you want. While we are not working anymore, my sense is that pay scales are similar to 10% higher than Phoenix, depending on the job and industry.

WHY NC??????????

Again, we don't plan on moving until we have everything covered and worked out. We will have jobs and a home before we start packing.

We are looking for a change in life. I am a native Arizonan and despise living here. Tucson is going downhill and I don't want to raise my children here any longer. I know every place has its issues- but that is why I came on here to get opinions on which places people think were the best to live in. We are simple people who don't need the big city to survive.

COL in NC is higher in the specific areas that someone would want to relocate to. There are some very cheap places in NC, many of which you can also find listed in the thread titled "worst cities in NC"..

Depending on your line of work, where you locate could be dependent on that. Certain jobs are more plentiful in some parts of the state than others. So it's hard to say, "move here."
