Question North Carolina for retirees ???

Would any of you all know where in North Carolina would be a good place for a single retiree to move from Long Island? This person (well , it's me really) does not like winter and wants to live in an over 55 community. What are the prices for homes there? How are the winters? Thank you for any help.

There's a great community just over the border from NY in Indian Land, South Carolina -- Sun City Carolina Lakes. My parents just moved there in March and they love it.

If you are a military retiree, North Carolina exempts you from state income tax, so North Carolina is probably cheaper. If you are not, South Carolina is definately cheaper with cheaper property, sales, and income taxes. But come on down. You can't go wrong.

I grew up in Pinehurst and have lived there all my life. There is a huge retirement community there. We have a lot of Northern transplants. If you are a golfer its definitely the place to go as there are many top level courses there. I plan to move back there when I get a little older and want to start a family. May also want to look at Southern Pines which is basically right beside Pinehurst they border each other.

We are moving to the Charlotte area with our two kids. It has to be a fairly fast move, my husband is changing jobs. We have a 13 year old that excels in school and an 8 year old that needs a little help. How are the schools in Belmont or Gastonia?

Agree with SC&U. But if that "retirement community" is not quite your thing yet, I would suggest BridgeMill or some other spots I know of. Also SC is softer on a pension, from what I am told.

Depending upon your financial status, I would highly recommend Pine Hurst (where golf is king), Wilmington (on the coast) and Apex or Chapel hill in The Triangle.

We retired to Raleigh years ago and now live in the country, about an hour from the beach.
