Gay/Lesbian Areas
My partner and I are looking to relocate to NC. What is the best areas to look in? We've heard Asheville and Winston-Salem. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? We want the most liberal area possible.
Thanks!

Try Durham or Chapel Hill... I heard Carrboro (next door to Chapel Hill) actually has a gay mayor. Stay away from Charlotte or any of the rural areas.

Asheville's good, but it is a smaller, close-knit community. If you like that (and like mountains) it's a good choice. Stay in or near downtown though...the rural parts just outside of it shift sharply to the "right" real fast if you know what I mean.
Winston-Salem?? Liberal? First I've heard of that. It's even more conservative than Charlotte or Greensboro, really.
I agree with Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, as mentioned above. (Although to be specific, Carrboro no longer has a gay mayor...he's now running for Orange County Commissioner. But Chapel Hill has a gay city councilman, though.)
Raleigh's decent...if you prefer a larger city. Just stick inside-the-beltline near downtown though. It's more of a clubby/nightlife/singles community though...domestic couples tend to prefer Durham & Chapel Hill/Carrboro instead (or Asheville for that matter).

Raleigh actually has a fairly large gay community and quite a few established and new clubs. One of my best friends is a lesbian and she is very active in the gay community as well as the straight. I feel that we all get along, and seem to be pretty liberal. I agree with RaleighRob, stay near downtown, there is not much to do once you get further north. I can ask my friend to give me the names of some of the places she goes if you would like. Maybe you can visit them if you head this way. There was a new place that recently opened up..I think it is called The J or something, it is on Peace Street. There is also Legends..more dance and Drag shows, and There is one other that we went to, that I can't remember the name to..I'll have to ask her. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions. I don't check intot he forum very often.

mt. airy
my mother in law lives is mt. airy so, we wanted to be within driving distance to her. we don't want to be too far but, we want to be able to get there without it being a LONG trip.
I will look into all the cities mentioned. I hate that we have to research. if everyone could just get along, this world would be a better place to live.
Thanks for all the tips!

In that case, Winston-Salem and/or Greensboro would be your best bet. Asheville is no closer to Mount Airy than Durham/Chapel Hill, really....looking at it on a map could lead one to think otherwise oddly enough.
You could find some rather decently gay-friendly areas in central Winston-Salem, like the west side of downtown, and easily jet up US 52 to Mount Airy in less than 45 minutes.

What I (and my wife) don't understand is, why isn't it just "ok" if straight people/families don't want to live in the same areas that gays live in?? A lot of Blacks don't necessarily want to live in an area that is predominatly White, Whites don't want to live in an area that is predominately Black and so on and so on.
A statement was said, "if everyone could just get along, this world would be a better place to live". Nice statement, but as long as different people have different religions, different political ideas, different incomes and different lifestyles.......people in this world and in the U.S. will just have to live where they can be accepted.
