Default Car leases...THAT much cheaper than NY?

OK. So my car is totaled from flood damage (it's our only car).
We are moving to NC in about 2-3 weeks.
Well, if i HAD to, I could make due without a car...and I guess rent one to drive down there with hubby and the cats...

Does it make sense to lease when we get down there and not do it here in NY now?
I won't have a NC license at that point or obviously insurance...
What would I need to have in place and it smart to wait?
Oh, in case it matters, I'm looking at replacing my car which is a Lexus RX350.

Help!

I manage a Lexus dealership in RI. You'll find leasing to be less in NC only because of the taxes. In NY your tax rate can be as high as 8.75% depending on your county.

All dealers pay the same for cars no matter where in the country you are. The only difference is that NC is served by the Southern Area so the vehicles may be equipped differently. You may be able to find a FWD RX350 there as opposed to AWD that is all we order in the NE.

I'd be happy to assist you if you'd like either locally or in NC. I know the managers at every Lexus dealer in NY (been with Lexus for years) and also have some contacts at the dealerships in NC (I've contacted them regarding employment when I relocate )

PM me if you'd like any assistance.

Isn't there a law in NY regarding the "ownership" of a leased vehicle, which in turn makes the leasing option more expensive? I may be wrong, but I thought that they do have stringent laws regarding this, for instance it also effects rental car rates because of the insurance purposes... Anybody know?

You will pay an annual property tax on your leased vehicle in NC.

That will depend on the tax rate for the county, city, school district, fire district, sewer district for the location listed as your residence.

In Asheville I just sent a $110 check to pay the property tax on a 10 year old pickup truck.

Welcome to NC, the state that has never seen a tax that they didn't like.

Basically.....When u purchase/lease a vehicle in NC you do not pay sales tax on the puchase price, but you will pay a yearly property tax on the vehicle. The amount of the tax will depend on the value of the vehicle and where you live.
