There are lots of areas (especially in Eastern NC) with high crime, but it won't be a ghetto in the Northeastern sense. I remember passing through Wilson prior to the completion of 264 and having to look out for winos with brown paper bags riding bicycles all over the street without so much as a glance for oncoming traffic.

Here's the statistics on the ethnic mix: http://www.city-data.com/zips/27893.html

I don't call it a ghetto, but the zip code covers a large area. You might check the Google streetview and decide for yourself.

Barton College is ethnically mixed, and the zip code as a whole is about 50% black, 35% white, and 17% Hispanic.

the house is a few blocks from Barton college. We are trying to figure if its worth it or just flip the house. I'm in Philly so there are areas I don't fit in don't wanna be the only white family in an all black area of an area with a lot of crime. I don't care if its mixed just hope its a nice area to have kids grow up.

The few blocks in your description is too vague to offer advice, because it makes a massive difference in that area. It is a mixed neighborhood but Wilson is polarized by income level not ethnicity.

The blocks south of Raleigh Road are primarily rental properties, with some renovated historic properties interspersed particularly on the east side of Nash Street. Gold Street improves as you travel northward away from the college, beyond Lucas Ave intersection.

I seem to recall the areas on the east side of Nash Street having a higher renter to owner ratio, than on the west side but that changes as you travel northward.

If you want to PM me the address I can tell you my $.02 worth.
Generally, for a similar price range I would consider something in Cavalier Terrace depending on what your needs are.

Regards,

Dave

Are people even successfully flipping houses anymore?

Wilson is hell and gone from being like Philly. It's quite dinky in comparison and not nearly as interesting.
