It sounds to me like you have a food addiction I would recommend that you start trying the local treats. Every area has it's specialties, if you want Lobster go to Main, If you want big steaks go to Texas. If you want good home-cooked southern food go to N.C. Don't try to change where you are by bringing in all the stuff you liked from where you were. We all can get home sick but remember why you moved here.

We just moved to Hickory from NJ and I do not miss anything!
Well, maybe the seafood off the boat, but that is it!

The things we love.....
Warm friendly people
Great restaurants, there are plenty that are smoke free.
Prices of homes
Much lower property taxes
cheaper car insurance
Blowing Rock-have you been there yet?
polite, well mannered children
Going to the mall at 1
warm weather for longer period of time.

I can give you recipes for the baked shrimp.

Relax and enjoy what the state has to offer!

PS- Dunkin doughnuts is planning to expand in the Carolinas

I remember when we first moved to NJ from PA - I missed many things about the area we left. I constantly reminded myself about the reasons we left and what drew us to our new home. All of the reasons we moved here worked out well, and now life is changing so we are exploring new options for the future. I've learned alot from this experience.

Transitions sometimes take time, but if you're open to exploring your new area and view it as an adventure you'll end up saying 'Wow! We never had this back in fill-in-your-old-town-here!'

I agree with PATTIV - "Relax and enjoy what the state has to offer" - The mantra that worked for me:embrace your new place!

Welcome to Hickory! I am sorry that you can't find your favorite food's here. It would be nice if someone would open a place that sold fresh seafood. I guess no one has thought about folk's moving here not being able to get fresh seafood. We do have a nice resturant called Captain's Galley on 321 North, it has very good seafood. There are other stores that open at ten o clock on Sunday morning's. Kohl's is a great store it is located across from the Valley Hill's Mall. If I can help you with anything just let me know. Once again WELCOME TO Hickory.
CATHY

You know, I was all ready to embrace anything and everything new that made North Carolina unique, but.... its mostly the same stuff we had in FL except for a few things that stand out.

Things I do miss from FL:
Plenty of Chili's or Don Pablo's restaurants
No Cuban food (I'm not cuban btw I just love it, and never realized I'd miss it)

Things I like here: I LOVE Cheerwine, you cant get it anywhere else but the Carolinas I guess
Bo Jangle's Biscuits
Chik-Fil-A's everywhere
Local church Port-a-Pit BBQ fundraisers (stopping by one today actually)

I'm kinda bummed there aren't as many BBQ places around me as people on this forum allude to because I wanted to see what the fuss is about with NC BBQ. I live in Gaston County outside Charlotte, and I would have to drive a couple towns over just top find a BBQ place if I'm not mistaken.

What do you miss?
I know that feeling. I am originally from Chicago and have lived in South Florida for 35 years. And there are still things I miss. When we visit my sister there I know exactly what we will be doing and eating most of the time. And fortunately for us someone from Chicago opened a hot dog stand selling Chicago style hot dogs and sausages not too far from me. When we move to North Carolina in the spring, will I miss my hot dogs? Yes. Will it affect how I feel about NC? No. But it is okay to miss the things you are used to and still embrace your new home. And then of course I will be missing things from here. I think I will have a really long list then. But then there will be new foods to try and places to explore so it will be fun.

Hey, y'all:
Dunkin' Donuts - Statesville
"fresh seafood" - anywhere on the "back way" toward the beach (in SC)
BBQ - anywhere in Lexington, NC off Hwy 64
Cheerwine does not taste like Dr. Pepper (in case anyone tries to tell you that) and Cherry-Lemon Sundrop is only available here.

Suggestion: when you visit the family back home, bring all the stuff you can that will keep. I used to bring back Polly-O Ricotta and part-skim Mozzerella and Italian sweet sausage (among other stuff) coffee soda and whitefish for my then-husband.

Otherwise, relax! Basketball is just around the corner.............. Be sweet!
