Sandhills Gamelands, North Carolina

Does anybody know if target shooting is allowed in the Sandhills Game preserve during off season when hunting is not allowed?
I tried looking at some of the gun sites and the answers are not definitive. Some say yes and some say no.
The website for the NC wildlife scene says if it is posted for no shooting you can't shoot. I went there yesterday and the place was empty and I saw no signs of any kind. I don't want to take a chance on being fined so I did not shoot.
This place is only 10 miles from me and with over 60,000 acres it seems like a great place for some target practice/ plinking.

Can't seem to find any contact info for the Game lands.

Anybody out there with any info?

Thanks.

Hi PDD,
I grew up in the Sandhills and we used to go target shooting on the gamelands all the time with no hassle. That was many years ago, though, and things may have changed. Here's a link to the gamelands regs:

Public Places (see link about halfway down the page).

Under the "Weapons" section it forbids weapons outside of hunting season on certain gamelands, but Sandhills is not included so I assume it's okay to have them there. You should call the NC Wildlife Commission office just to be sure though.

Thanks for the response arbyunc. I called the headquarters in Raleigh and the person there said they don't regulate target shooting in that area and it is permissible outside of the hunting season.
Looks like I'll have plenty of areas to explore this Summer.

Cool. That's a beautiful area--I spent lots of time there as a young man. Hope you enjoy your time there!
