Actually, someone did ask about this town and were referred to the Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham forum. This thread is about "worst" towns. I must agree that Hillsborough is one of the best places to live in NC, as I lived there for four years right in the historic district downtown. I was a single parent at the time and it wasn't that expensive back in 1997 when I signed my lease. The house I was renting was offered for sale to me at 118K as a renter, but I did not have the means to buy. It went on the market in the fall of 2005 and sold in the spring of 2006for somewhere around 150K. It is now on the market again, a little over a year later, NO improvements at all, for 185K. I doubt they will get this much, but you never know. So, the cost of living in Hillsborough has skyrocketed, since it is no longer one of the best kept secrets. I must admit though, I spent most of my time in Carrboro, a very easy 25 minute drive south, hanging out at WSM (Weaver Street Market). They opened their first alternate location now...in Hillsborough! I am going to relocate back to this area from Chicago, and having lived also in Brevard for a year, I think the triangle area is the best place to live if you haven't retired yet.

The absolute worst place to live in NC in my opinion would be Concord NC. It is a very popular place because of the Lowes motor speedway, but other than that there is nothing good about this area. If you have teenage children and you think that there could be even the slightest chance that they could get in trouble, then this place ain't for you. If they get in trouble the judges are merciless. There are Policeman everywhere here. You feel like you are contently under surveillance. Believe me, it is a miserable place to live.

Kinston? I moved there from new york and people welcomed me with open arms. Not only did they welcome me but they through us a neighborhood party too. It may have some less fortunate people with no money but we all became friends! The problem is people think so bad of Kinston and don't move there. Well Don't! No I did not come from trash either, My block alone each household income is around 120k a year. All this town needs is a little more people like me and on the block that cares about the town and bulldozed the property and start over. To come here from any other part of the country you must have a little money to start over!!!

Anywhere inland between Fayetteville and a few miles of the coast. Hot, poor, and a huge discrepancy between the richest and poorest people. Greenville, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Tarboro, are the worst areas in my opinion. I dont like Greensboro or Burlington or Durham that much either..

I don't know if you have found a place in NC yet? I know this was posted some time ago. If not, check the Brunswick County Area. Oak Island,Southport,Holden Beach.Boiling Spring Lakes. Located between Wilmington NC and Myrtle Beach SC, Brunswick County is one of the fastest frowing small places in the US.

Couldn't agree more! This place has changed in the past 20 years. Big time! Used to be a great place to live "outside of Charlotte" until they sold out to the developers. It went from crazy 10 years ago to stupid within the last 5 years. Everyone bowed down and worshipped the ground Mr.Murdoch walks on when he bought the mill and decided to develop the area. The man has vast holdings in the area, so you would expect that kind of thing in a mill town with nothing else going on. Basically, the local government are the developers. If they had only used Davidson's example of controlled growth, I feel things would have turned out different. Davidson controlled growth, much to the chagrin of the developers. They didn't stop it, just measured it. They got quality, managable growth. Guess where people want to live now? Property values have held or increased. The towns surrounding Davidson-Cornelius,Huntersville, Mooresville just opened the gates and let the developers run wild. Now they are paying for it with traffic gridlock, school overcrowding, lack of public services, etc. You can either manage development or be run over by it. Concord/Kannapolis got flattened. Let me out of here. As soon as my kids finish school, we are headed for the exits. It didn't have to be that way. Used to be a nice, laid back place to live within shouting distance of Charlotte. Or just count the number of traffic lights that pop up in your area. A sign of things to come.

Rocky Mount sucks these days. Im sure it was nice 30 years ago. Wilson is 50 times better than Rocky Mount just on its variety of good restaurants alone. And Im not talking about all the crappy restaurant chains either.

Fayetteville, etc etc
I would have to say Fayetteville is the worst city, if you can call it that. I have lived here for a few years and each day I hate it more and more. It is like a bomb exploded and what is left are ghetto rednecks who are looking for a dumb soldier to trap. Thankfully I only have another year left at UNCP for Graduate studies and then I am moving as fast as I can. Pembroke is the worst too. The people are very ignorant and rude. Even most of the students there are also very arrogant and nasty. Pembroke is a dirty town that really needs a make over. If the people there actually cared about themselves more their moonshine then maybe it would be a nice place. I thought that the students at my old school in NY were rude, but that is nothing campared to most students at UNCP. The prof are nice, its just the student body.
I am a teacher and I would never send my kids to a school in Cumberland or Robeson County. And if there are nice people here they get lost in the bunch with all the rude people.
