I live in Fayetteville, have on and off for 25 years, never liked it, never will and don't plan to retire here.
Goldsboro, very dirty looking town, not much to cheer about.
Spring Lake, I call it Fayetteville Light.
Raeford and Sanford, too many illegals crowding the streets.

I've read about the transplants from the North and how to avoid them but the ironic truth is that these transplants are usually educated folks that bring much to a community. Would you rather have folks from Hoke County (the lowest education ratings in NC) move to your town or would you have someone that works, pays taxes, has insurance, takes an active role in the community etc. Many North Carolinians I know have 8-9th grade educations, can barely read or write, throw trash out their car window, use the medicade system like a South American Immigrant and have the attitude that "If I don't get it, someone else will." Take, take, take and give little in return. That's what I've seen from many of the natives here, very abusive of the land and the people. I watched a so-called Lumbee Indian beat a Beaver to death with a crow bar for the thrill of it. Give me a break!

I think Robeson County and its towns would be the worst I've seen. I have moved back and forths from Baltimore, MD and my opinion would be not to move in this dead-end Hole. There really isn't anything here except for travling through Inerstate I-95 N or S to get away as fast as u can. Most of the people here are very rude and self-centered. The drugs are trying to take over; and of course, if people are on drugs they mostly are out of work and on the streets looking for means of money. I can keep going on with more about this county , but I think I said enough. Just a reminder, there is more!

I agree on Robeson County. I drove all over the state growing up and Lumberton/Robeson County was one place I always felt really uncomfortable as a woman driving alone, the whole town just had a seedy, scary vibe to it.

I worked for the state department of corrections for a few years, and I noticed that we had a whole lot of inmates from that area, and many of them were in for some truly screwed up crimes, and also tended to be hateful and antisocial toward both guards and other inmates.

Let me preface this by saying, I do not live in Lumberton, but do visit there occassionally. Lumberton really has some lovely areas, and they have been working on their downtown. I have to visit that area for work sometimes, and I have never felt uncomfortable in downtown or anywhere that I go in Lumberton. There is also a great children's playspace, Exploration Station in downtown, and a wonderful restaurant -- Blackwater Grill. A couple of great shops are Sisters (Lilly Pulitzer, among other brands) and Hissyfit. While all communities have good and bad, it is not all gloom and doom in Lumberton.

Robeson County is the largest geographically in NC, so I imagine a lot of inmates do come from there, but don't base your opinion of this city/county based on that info. For example, Aiken, SC is a great town/area, but it also has a high sex offender rate (http://sexoffenderissues.blogspot.com/2007/09/sc-aiken-holds-highest-child.html)-- (broken link) go figure?

Worst city in North Carolina? Most of them are quite nice, except of course Jacksonville. How to prepare for a visit to Jacksonville? Go to Blockbuster and rent a copy of Taxi Driver.

Amen!

Just because some people haven't had a great experience, why call all Fayetteville natives rude and uneducated? It really kind of hurts to be snubbed so often.

Default Worst Towns...

I wouldn't call Pitt County Memorial Hospital "Bullet Proof" or anything similar to that. They've been in the red since the start of 2007 and with the high percentage of poverty and medicaide patients plus cut backs in coverage from all insurance companies...well, you get the picture. Great people though, hospital just needs to update management, etc. University is pretty good as far as I know.
