However, if you drive north just a mile or 2, you'll find a sweet, quaint little downtown area with great, historic buildings & museums, as well as lovely restaurants (like the patisserie run by an honest-to-goodness French pastry chef). There are some beautiful, older homes in that area & some gorgeous newer neighborhoods, too.

I work in Hillsborough and found that part only exists in the little six part of downtown. The rest of the place is pretty much Hardee's, Wendy's, etc.
Their downtown does have the new Locopops though, and Tupelo's. Tupelo's has some of the best sweet cornbread I've ever eaten.

But even that is enough to prove that Hillsborough is more than just trailers as the previous poster suggested. And just so you know, there are areas of Hillsborough outside of downtown that are nice. Ayr Mount is a nice old home that is a perfect place to take a walk. And if you want to see one of the nice, newer neighborhoods in the area, be sure to check out Churton Grove.
As I said, I think the town has a split personality. There's the uglier area near the highway, but the historic areas and the newer neighborhoods are quite charming.

Asheville. I fled in 2000 and never looked back. #1 place for any artist to avoid.

Well, that's fine.
Could anyone point out predominantly blue areas in North Carolina? and non- fundamentalist? Quite serious, because those would be areas I would prefer.
Thank you.

No the red is in Raleigh ( N C State)
The triangle (raleigh, durham & chapel hill) has a residency test one must take before moving here. You need recognize Duke Blue, Carolina Blue and
State Red and know at least 10 jokes about the schools .

How long ago was that? A citizen's right to display the flag is protected by Federal law now.
(Public Law 109-243 dated July of 2006).
It's hard to believe that after 230 years, Congress had to pass a law to permit the display of the U.S. Flag by all Americans on their own private property.

I searched the N&O and found it was 2000. Seems like it was more recent.
Can you beleive a HOA would dare tell someone the American flag needs to
be in the side or back yard!! I am glad they passed a law about that.
We live right past Raleigh City limits and have no home owners asso.
Now I wish we had one to tell my husband to clean up his junk
