Bit of a stereotype, wouldnt you say? We have family that lives in Franklin and the people, though not city slickers, have always been friendly.

When I was in college, I interned with a television station in a large city south of Franklin. I accompanied a reporter and a cameraman to cover a story out there. We stopped at a well known fast food restaurant for a burger. A middle aged white man came over to us and said to the black cameraman, "you're a little lost a'int ya son?" (I was ready to fight). In other words....why are u here? U are black. So........yeah, prejudice does indeed exist in WNC. Plus, I have relatives who lived in Marion, (they HATED it). Marion is a red neck dump and full of racists---mud slinging, meth labs, huge trucks, rough women, you name it. The problem is that these areas have always been poor. Poor mountain people don't "get out" much and aren't exposed to people of other cultures. That's where bigotry comes from in these instances.

Winston-Salem, and Greensboro are not that nice either and not that much to really do there. Alot of redneck types in those areas. Raleigh's downtown isn't all that great in my opinion, but there are some nice areas in raliegh.

One mans ceiling is another mans floor. We all have different ideas as to what makes a place great or "worst" city, and what place we strive to be.I think its great when someone is really happy to call a place home.Different strokes

I just want to set the record straight about Durham. I moved to southern Durham, near The Streets at Southpoint, November of 2005. I moved down from a very rural area of Massachusetts. This is my first experience living in a city…..if you even want to call this area of Durham a city. After LIVING in Durham for over a year, I can truly say I love living here. There is so much to do and everything is kept up so well. The only area of Durham I avoid at night is east central Durham. That area is where you will find most of the crime. It is an area that has not kept up with most of Durham. If you avoid that area, you will find that Durham has so much to offer. Northern Durham County is very rural, with lots of land and farmhouses. West central Durham has Duke University and many older and very nice homes. Southern Durham is where everything new is located, including the fabulous Streets at Southpoint mall. Most of the people that bash Durham are people that do not live here. If you do not live here, you do not know how good it is. When trying to get advice on Durham, listen to people that live here, not people that like to bash from afar.

Can anyone tell me if there are some particularly 'run-down' areas in and around the Hickory area where it might not be wise to invest? So far the area looks beautiful (on-line) but every Paradise has its downside.
Thinking maybe a lot on one of the lakes in the area. Where are the good spots and the ones to stay away from?
Thanks to all, Gary
