Worst towns in NC? (Charlotte, Raleigh: good schools, subdivisions, income)

You can tell which areas to or not to invest when you come visit. There is public housing in Hickory, but those parts are sectioned off by themselves pretty much. One, and the largest area is located off of South Center St, which is south of the downtown area. Another is called Ridecrest, even more off by itself on the far eastern area of the city.

Typically, I have seen the northwestern part of the city with the nicer parts of town. Also the more historic, older neighborhood around Frye Regional Hospital.

Check out Hickorygov.com, the police link on there is informative. The city police have the city broken down into different "pacts" as they call it - also known as precints to other police departments.

Thanks, Carolina native. We may visit in March. Sounds great. That's the idea of these threads. For people like me to maybe 'cross' some places off the list and concentrate on those areas that the natives rave about.

Well,,I live in yadkinville,and I must say,,If you like country we are the place to be.A very small town,that doesnt have alot of anything.A nice place to raise a family.30 minutes from all the cities around,,like winston,statsville,,etc.a central hub.Anyway,,,there is nothing wrong with our town.

yeah, if you dont mind being in the middle of nowhere...sorry...my sister lives in taylorsville...nothing to do there.....they have to drive @ 1/2 hour to go to the stores etc

The smell isn't always there (well from what I noticed). Maybe it was the way the wind blew.

I have lived in Rocky Mount area most of my life. The schools are alright, but I have heard that is going down hill. Crimes are high here. If you are planning to move here it is best to live in surrounding towns like Nashville or Red Oak. They have a small town feel, but close enough to Rocky Mount for shopping and job commute. If you are a younger couple like myself I would not recommend this area. Not alot of culture or nightspots unless you carry a gun. I am not saying this is a bad city all the way around, but it definently has its low points.

My husband and I are actually looking to relocate to the Asheville area. If any one knows of some nice quaint surrounding towns with reasonably priced real estate please let me know. Thanks

I attended junior high in Henderson (Vance County). I was a kid and had good friends, so I was happy enough there at the time, but much of the population was racist and ignorant. When I went back there a few years ago for a high school reunion I was really appalled at the place. It was a sad enough town when I lived there, and its fortunes have really fallen, at least in the neighborhood I grew up in. A couple of years ago Henderson was profiled in Mother Jones magazine as the epitome of poverty-stricken, downtrodden mill towns in the U.S.

At the high school reunion, I was talking to a woman from my class who has grown up into a delightful, interesting adult. I asked if she still lived in Henderson and she simply grasped my arm and widened her eyes in horror, as if to say, "Are you kidding?"
