Try Dunn NC... I think the tornados missed thier marks last week and hit the wrong two towns . They should have hit Dunn and Fayetteville and wiped them both off the face of the map. It wouldn't hurt my feeling one little bit .

What a HEARTLESS thing to say! I completely HATE Chapel Hill and Carrboro but I would NEVER wish destruction on those towns! People died in the recent tornados incase you missed it! And had your oh so loving wish come true, that means people in both Dunn and Fayetteville could have and would have died.

I LOVE my state, both good and bad towns. I am PROUD to be a native of this state because heaven knows we are a rare breed these days. And I NEVER want ANY destruction to happen to it.

I would avoid anything east of Hamlet and west of the Battleship North Carolina on U.S. 74, anything north of Fort Bragg and south of Rocky Mount on I-95, or anything north of Asheville, yet south of Linville Falls in the mountains if you're looking for more metropolitan area. Everything previously mentioned is sticks central, without getting into places like Lincolnton, Elkin, Laurinburg, etc.

I knew about the two people that parrished in the tornato strike, one was a little ten year old boy, I was down there when it hit and I feel for thier families and friends.
So let me just narrow it down ta two very specific locations. Where my ex-wife lives and her family, hows that? So that way no innocent people get touched . Oh. and by the way, I never said that I wanted people to die, I just said that I wanted those two town wiped off the face of the earth.

Hi,

Just reading your thread here, I'll be stationed at Ft. Bragg for a short while and would like some advice on the towns near by.
I'm looking for basic shopping, good restaurants, local activities, museums the like.
As a native Californian (don't worry I'm not going to move to N.C.) I'm very used to being spit on and treated like garbage and even worse here in the Bay Area. I'm guessing that this won't happen in North Carolina. (I'm hoping!)
Though I'm sure that there are places in NC that don't mind GI's and some places that would rather not have us around. Just trying to find out what those places are, where there are, so I don't go wandering into them.

Thanks!

Worst towns in NC - well we lived in Raeford, which has got to be one of the worst, but through our adventures throughout NC, the whole state is in bad shape. Since we are "transplants", we have had the opportunity to experience life outside of NC and this whole state is in need of serious help.

The people - well you can forget about that whole "southern hospitality" thing. The people here are disrespectful, rude, selfish, uneducated... I could go on. Just read the posts of people who live here and I'm sure you'll see a fine example of the education system. And I hope that no one moving here is expecting to find people who are cultured because I haven't met a single "born & raised" North Carolinian who has left the state, even on vacation. There are some people who have never even left their town.

The environment, well, most of my opinion is based on not being from a climate like this one. It's way too hot and humid. In the summer, you'll need to take at least 3 showers a day just to feel clean. In the winter, well, if you like hanging your Christmas lights in shorts, this is your place.

As for things to do, we're too far from anything to comment. I'm sure there are lots of things to do in this state, but where we're located, all activities have to be planned and vacation days need to be taken. The coast is the closest, at about 2.5 hours, and that's if you like the crowded, party-type beaches. The hills - that's about 4-5 hours, not exactly a day trip. And the mountains - you're looking at 8-9 hours. Driving to a bigger city definately offers more, with Raleigh being about an hour away and Charlotte about 2 hours.

The roads - this state offers few scenic drives. Hope you're not expecting a clean road, as everyone here seems to just throw their trash out their window. And what's with the loaves of bread? Seems about weekly that we would see a whole loaf of bread (still in the bag) on the side of the road. I've seen everything from fast food containers to full diapers - not only on the side of the road but in the parking lots. Nothing beats pulling into a parking spot than having to step over a squished and splattered diaper. If people are like this everywhere, then it's no wonder that we have such environmental issues.

Education - that is probably the biggest joke ever. Had we been warned about the education system in Raeford, we would have avoided it like the plague. My husband and I both took classes at the local colleges and, let's just say that we took harder classes in high school. My kids went to school in Raeford and I think they have learned more over the summer than they did in school. I worked at that same school and from a behind the scenes view - A LOT needs to be done to fix the schools in Raeford. My husband and I joke that we've lost I.Q. points by living in NC.

The best reason I've heard yet for the pathetic excuse for the way they do things here - "That's the way it's always been done." And that quote, comes directly from the principal at my children's school. And the base commander.
As an educated North Carolina native, who has only 'lived' within 20 miles of my birthplace, I have had the opportunity to travel to every continent with the exception of 1. I have vacationed in or conducted business in 44 of the 50 states, Europe, Canada, Mexico, I could go on, and I am not alone. I always find it interesting when people come here and make statements about the slow pace; the education, the living conditions, yet many of our cities are listed as 'BEST PLACES TO LIVE'. We have several of the BEST UNIVERSITITES and HOSPITALS. This of course does not mean all, and well I've never visited any place where all cities and counties were perfect, nor are the people. I can say however, that isn't it wonderful that we have military that are brave enough to fight for the freedom that we can live where we want. As the daughter of a Navy officer, I do appreciate the sacrifices military families make. But what a shame it is that you are so closed minded to the people and places within North Carolina. Your vision must be clouded by the glasses of perfection that you wear. Although not all southerners are friendly, many are. And there must be something about this great state of ours that entices people to move here or there wouldn't be so many from somewhere else. So maybe it isn't the southerners your running into, because with the rates of North Carolina relocations you may find the rude persons coming from somewhere else, or maybe it is just you, as reading your comments, you don't seem to be too welcoming yourself, or educated for that matter, as usually those who are educated can appreciate the customs of other locations and glean from their experience both positive and negative. Good Luck in your travels and in your life, I hope you negative attitude takes a positive turn.

I had to go back and find this part..

1. I hope the door didn't hit you on the way out.
2. What exactly is wrong with actually staying in your home state or home town? I value my entire family, they are my rock, my world. I do not want to see them twice a year. I value my weekly Sunday supper with my family. I value having the ability to call my brother or dad or grandfather or uncle or cousin knowing they can be to where I am within 20 minutes.
3. I am not the only with the language problem
4. It is people like you that make the natives bitter towards transplants.

I am sorry that you had to experience the tornado. I can understand the feelings towards an ex and their family. And while I can understand you wanting towns (ex. Chapel Hill and Carrboro) wiped off the face of the earth I just do not agree with it. I am sorry if I was overly snappy.
