Hi All!

My husband is a military officer and I am a the spouse ( a veteran myself). My husband is a Midwestern Folk ( Irish blood and German descent) and I am a Puerto Rican/Spaniard born in Puerto Rico educated in school counseling and school administration and currently unemployed. I have a minimal accent which still turns heads in some places.... Why do I mention this??? Because my concern is that of racism in the area.

Our priority for our daughter is her EDUCATION, and also a place where she can feel accepted and where we will not experience a lot of overt racism. So we choose the best school and then the house. We dislike provincialism..

My daughter is a brilliant child academically and we look for a school that will develop her academic skills, and will be a safe place for her. Currently she is 9 years old assessed at reading and comprehending at the 12th grade level, she is social and loves to read, write stories, sing and work with the girl scouts. Not to flaunt about her, but she needs a school that will work with her unique ability so she is not bored to death in class. At our current school she works with a specialized teacher. We do not want acceleration but rather specialized training while she is still with her age peers.

We have been advised to live off post and try to find housing in areas as Southern Pines.
We are not quite religious but we raise our daughter in the Methodist church. We love peace and quite and do not like lots of traffic.

Where should we go and where will we feel more at home??

Our Rental Price for the three years is:

1400 to 1900 plus utilities

Please give us any feedback
Moving in June! and visiting the area next week to get a feel for it. We have no option but to go where the Army sends us!

I can't help with the education issues as I'm pretty far removed from that, but Fayetteville is very diverse. I don't think you need to be overly concerned about racism, although it exists every where. As a town Fayetteville has very definitely embraced the military and you will find all kinds of folks from all kinds of backgrounds there.

I would look at Harnett County. Western Harnett has some good schools--comparatively speaking.

If you can afford that much in rent, I would definitely recommend living in Southern Pines vs. Fayetteville. SP Elementary should be a fine school for your daughter. It's done our daughter just fine. Fayetteville does have Fayetteville Academy, which is a private school for grade K-12, but that's about all I know about it. It sounds nice.

Fayetteville, I have noticed, has a very high racial tension; the most of any city I've lived in thus far. This is mainly because a good portion of the crime here gets committed by a certain group of people. You just never know where/when something is going to pop off in good ol' Fayettenam.

I would advise Pinehurst area as well. Some really good schools in the Moore County system. There have always been a lot of retired persons from around the U.S. who settle in Pinehurst, so you will find it a more open to transplants. They are also very military friendly in that area. Traffic is not a real issue.

Just FYI, many Fort Bragg Families live in Southwest Wake County. We live in that area and it takes me 45 minutes to get to the Fort Bragg gate at Butner Road. In Wake, you would have the option of getting her into certain magnet schools that might cater to her academic needs.

BaseAO.com has a really good breakdown of neighborhoods surrounding Fort Bragg that might help get a better feel of the area. They also list the schools in the county.
