I'm thinking about moving to NC for one year. The job I would have could be located at many different sites around the state, so I'm trying to get a good feel for which city would be best for my interests.
- I'm in my early 20s and won't know anyone so I want somewhere easy to meet people
- Love the outdoors
- Liberal if possible
- Walkable nightlife area
Charlotte or Greensboro, but not much outdoor opportunities without driving...
Stay away from Winston-Salem area...unwelcoming overall...rigid thinking...

Thanks everyone
I'd say to take a look at the Triangle, particularly Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, or Carrboro. Lots of 20-somethings in the area, Wake, Orange, and Durham counties all tend to be more liberal and pretty decent nightlife to be had, especially in Raleigh.

You really are cut out for the west coast.. No where in NC is really "outdoorsy".

Wow...really. The Wilmington area is absolutely outdoorsy. Ever drive by the "Loop" at Wrightsville Beach? And the beaches are full of people year round. Hugh McRae Park and Halyburton Park both have running/walking trails...and the City is almost finished with a 10 mile Cross City Trail....folks out jogging, biking...even many to work.

Someone's never been to Western NC. That's all it is, with a few small cities (save Asheville) thrown in.
To the OP, Asheville might be your cup of tea. Big enough to have stuff going on, with small town atmosphere. Check it out. TONS of stuff to do outdoors if that's your thing. Nantahala isn't far either if you enjoy canoeing/rafting.
The outdoors isn't my thing, but all the breweries in Asheville is right up my alley!

It's not so much that RoaminRebel may not have been to those places - that user just likes to make it patently clear how much they detest North Carolina. In general their opinions should be taken with

First question is, why did you pick NC, without knowing about any of the cities? It's a large state. what tells you "NC is right for me" without knowing [XX city in NC] is right for me.
What if the "ideal city" for you was not in NC? It's odd to pick a state first, city second--usually people pick a city/town they like, whatever state it happens to be in.

That is neither my intent nor my true sentiments about NC, but I am not going to give the impression that NC is CA or CO with just a slight southern twang... Based on the priorities that the OP listed its pretty clear what they're looking for and NC most likely isn't it. More dissatisfied transplants is not what the state needs..
