Yeah, he makes a **** good point. And that is that in this puritanical nation, many people are labeled as "sex offenders" when they shouldn't be. For example, prostitution -a victimless crime that should be legal and is legal in most nations including Canada and the U.K. - is enough to get someone put on a sex offender list? Truly sickening.

There are also widely practiced sexual acts in North Carolina that can be prosecuted as "Crimes Against Nature" I think they call them. I just would love to know who goes around and peeps in people's windows to see what they do in the privacy of their own bedroom. Also I think it is still illegal to live together without the benefit of marriage in North Carolina but it is a good thing they don't arrest everyone that does it. We have had some people on this list that lived within a mile from us. But the list is there for a purpose. You study it, examine the dangers, and protect your children the best way you can. When I had children here I never allowed them outside unsupervised. I never allowed Brianna to go any further than I could see on her bicycle. Strolling up and down the street without one of us was out of the question. And the thing about it was it wasn't so much because of this one offender who by all accounts seemed to be cleaning up his act. It was because of the ones that could have been out there that we didn't know about. It was more about the 50's common sense "Don't talk to strangers" things. Unfortunately now just not talking to strangers doesn't get it. When they attack and kidnap a child they just usually get out of the car or whatever and take them, sometimes in board daylight. As for Halloween, that got dangerous years ago. If I had children that age, I would find something else for them to do on Halloween if it were taking them trick or treating to relatives.

Bethany, I have read another post you wrote on about a book. You gave so much information that definatley gave me a look of NC. It was beautiful how you went through the different generations.
I would have to agree with you about how strange laws could be. But these people looked scary. I constantly look at sex offenders not only for children but also as women you never know who can hurt you. I have three boys 15,16 & 17. Two are over six feet tall my youngest however has not hit his growth spirt yet. But we always talk about these sick people, unfortunatley teenagers think that they are immuned to any dangers.

C+R, There is no "perfect" place to move. If you want Utopia you are dreaming. I now live in Caldwell County. Though it is wonderful it isn't perfect. You are going to have to prioritize and make some adjustments. Sadlly, there are sex offenders everywhere. Have you checked the lisitng of your current location? Hudson is a very nice little town with small town charm and warmth.

From what I've understood of NC law, even minor infractions can get someone on the sex-offender list....My point...just don't look up how many people on the list are in your town...find out WHY they're on there. There's always a good chance some of them are really harmless to you and your family.

Ditto. I checked the list for my area and was surprised to learn that we have a "sex offender" right up the road. It didn't take long for neighborhood gossip to reveal the reason: he was caught having a consensual sexual relationship with his first cousin. People with a maligned, "Deliverance"-type of prejudice toward the south would probably regard that with amusement; I thought it a big waste of law enforcement manpower. A first cousin relationship might cause me to wrinkle my nose, but they were both of legal age.
If there is going to be a sex offender registry, I think it should be classed. Start with the Class A - a possible threat to the community, but they paid their dues for the last crime they committed and so can't be locked up; down to lower classes for those convicted of laws currently on the books (though said laws might not be sensible) who are not a danger to the community, only a threat to continue breeding too close to their own bloodlines.

Thank you for the complement. The book is still in progress and I have to do a rewrite on one of the chapters. Hopefully sooner or later I will finish it. But it got sidetrack with other issues. PM me if you want more information on what NC was like earlier than now. I am 55 years old and have been here all my life, nearly in the same spot I am in now.

I believe I am right when I say this, it is illegal for double first cousins to marry in North Carolina but first cousins can marry. In fact my family did it clear through my grandparents generations. My grandmother and grandfather on my father's side were sisters. It creates all kinds of problems though with intermarrying like that with possible genetic birth defects which unfortunately a lot of us in the family have carried from generation to generation. I don't think it is a good idea to marry that close and can't imagine wanting to marry anyone that close in kin to me either. But the sad part too and I have witness this with insufficient family knowledge that some people may be actually related after they have been together romantically and that does concern me. Back in the day mobility was a prime factor in marriageablity and who you could get to in order to be in a relationship with. Now the opposite is true and with the divorce rate higher and higher with half siblings the problem increases when you don't know who is married to whom and how you could or couldn't be related to. I am just blessed to have a pretty traditional family that knows everyone through about 13 generations. But people don't do that this much these days. And even when they do, sometimes they find surprises they wish they hadn't.
