I am curious the area's where everyone is claiming to be the 'worst schools.' My husband and I are actively looking to relocate to NC, more specifically the Indian Trail/Matthews area and I heard the schools were very good. However I am aware of the 'rezoning' and that it is causing a lot of uncertainty but after reading this thread it seems more widespread than we originally thought.

The school quality you've heard about is generally true right now--the worry is that being 46th or 48th in the US in teacher pay, a Legislature that treats teachers very disrespectfully, and actually having other states poaching NC teachers at job fairs, will cause education quality going forward to decline. I personally know of two long-time teachers who left the profession this year; one took early retirement and one is looking for another career altogether.

Butler High made the top 1000 high school list - US News

NC only had 6 schools in the entire state make the list and two are in Cary. No others in the area you are considering.
