Relocating to Fayetteville NC from NH
My husband and I are looking to move to Fayetteville NC from a small town in NH, we are in our mid 20's with a 3 yearold and a 1 year old boys and would also be looking into good schools down there. My husbands uncle lives in Sanford and told us that the job market right now is good down there since its horrible up here! I would just like to know what we are in for, in moving down there....the weather, prices for rent and what might be included, animal friendly places, and which parts we should look into moving to. I would like a nice neighborhood with a close park to walk to and possible like a condo unit or some what gated community. We will be moving at the end of Feb. so this is just the begining of our research. If anyone could help that would be great!
Thank you a bunch in advanced!

Here's what to expect weather-wise. Fayetteville averages based on 74 years of historical data:

Honestly. You're looking for a city more along the lines of Raleigh or Charlotte areas. You will probably get let down by Fayetteville. It's a very drab military town. Depressing really. There are some good parts, but they are few and far between. For some reason out of all the other cities in NC, Fayetteville has lacked the progressiveness of others. The population there is heavily transitional, because of the military being the main economic resource. For some reason the summers there are very hot and muggy when compared to other cities around NC. Hmm...

Funny you mentioned that, someone told me once it was all of the asphalt and cement used in all of the businesses in Cumberland Co.
To the original poster: Yes it gets miserably hot and muggy come summertime. A decent house to rent you're looking at $700 on up and that may be with or without utilities. But houses for rent tend to get snatched up around here very quickly so you have to act quickly too, this due to the overcrowding of the city. If you like to shop we have 4 Super Wal Marts and if you like to eat we have almost every restaurant you could think of. Personally I don't recommend living in "Fayettenam" to anyone but some don't mind. I think you'd be happier in either Sanford or Lillington.

Hello,
I am happy to help. Yes, Fayetteville is a melting pot for many who are, and were in the military, as well as many locals...from all of whom are those make this area inviting and enjoyable to residents and newcomers. I believe that a community of people who are from or have served all over the world benefits everyone, especially the dynamics of our school system. Fayetteville has been undergoing much growth over the past few years. The downtown revitalization effort has brought a tremendous facelift to the downtown area. There is an abundance of new home construction to compliment the established and historic districts, and, our projected growth leaves opportunity for new businesses.
See the Cumberland County website here: http://www.co.cumberland.nc.us/
As far as job market goes, you can check Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com,

and the Fayetteville Observer (the local paper) at:

Cumberland County School System: http://www.ccs.k12.nc.us/
(you may have to copy and paste) Many schools are part of the State's More at Four program which offers an enrichment program for preschoolers!
View the local MLS for the type of home you're looking for (rental or residential to buy) here:
http://www.fayettevillencmls.com/fay/pubmain.php
(click "find a home", then "rental"...but, if your credit is okay 600+ and you've been on your job for 2 years, why not buy??)
Best wishes!

There have been a lot of posts regarding Fayetteville, a search can help you. I lived there for only a year, and try to be positive. Sure there is some negative, but I thought it was a decent place to live, we lived in a nice area, took some searching to find our niche. Here are some links to some threads I've posted in:

As far as it being more hot and humid, yes it does seem that way and records confirm it. I think that Fayetteville is in a little depression, with surrounding areas higher in elevation, not much but enough to trap heat and decrease winds. VERY HOT, but hopefully coming from NH you'll appreciate the warmer winters too
Good luck.

DO NOT MOVE HERE!!! Fayetteville has been rated the 3rd worst place to llive. We currrently live outside of Fayetteville and have been here for about 2 1/2 years. I cry everyday that we are stuck in this awful place. The crime is unbelievable. I wish I would have done way more research before moving here.

Fayetteville doesn't really have an industry outside of the Kelly Springfield tire plant. Crime is high and the standard of living, as a general rule, is low. Fayetteville is trying to redefine itself but in my opinion it's not going well.
I moved from Fay to Raleigh when I went to college. Raleigh is 1000 times better!!

I really get tired of the "Fayetteville bashing" on here. I've lived in this area my entire life, and would NOT want to live in Raleigh or Charlotte. All areas have their problems, and Fayetteville is no different. But there is MORE than plenty to do here, if you bother to look for it--it's in the newspaper every week. As for crime--there are few places in Fayetteville I don't feel safe--and the ones that are dangerous, I avoid.
Downtown Hay Street is now thriving! We have museums and restaurants, and MANY good schools! Many of the national chain stores in town are the TOP stores in the NATION in sales! And more new stores are coming all of the time!
People always say go to Sanford or Lillington. Well, there's Eastover and Stedman in Cumberland County. They're really growing and within a 20 minute drive into "town" (Fayetteville). And crime is alot less than many other places!

Rated where? I'll take it over Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Durham, Charlotte, Winston-Salem, & Greensboro any day! And there's no more crime here than in Durham!
