Quite honestly not much. Stayed in Summerville, Conway and Myrtle Beach quite often and am familiar with those cities and their surrounding areas, and have visited Greenville but other than that...just the interstates and the little podunk towns right off the interstate to get gas. I guess there's not much to pique anyone;s interest driving on an interstate through any state, though. I have heard that Columbia is a dump and I haven't heard much about any other cities except I think Anderson and Spartanburg, but I don't even remember what I've heard about those towns.
The person who told you Columbia is a dump probably went to Clemson; it's far from that. Sometimes it catches a lot of flack because it gets pretty hot in the summertime but it's actually a pleasant place with a lot going on for its size. Anderson and Spartanburg are cool (kind of like High Point but in better condition), but I think SC does well with a lot of its smaller towns like York, Cheraw, Camden, Aiken, Beaufort, Georgetown, Abbeville, etc.
Which neighbor do you prefer (include Tennessee and Georgia if you like)? This can be anything, from which state you believe is more similar to NC, which state you enjoy traveling in, etc.
Prefer VA. SC just seems so ugly to me except Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Greenville. It's so blah. I do love Greenville though. I wouldn't mind living there.

Anytime I hear someone say they don't like Columbia other than someone not liking USC, it's usually because of the bolded. Occasionally the fact that it's the capitol and the presence of Fort Jackson come up but mostly it's because of the heat and humidity.
I like SC better because of proximity of Charlotte and Myrtle Beach, Charleston & even Greenville. SC reminds me of sunshine, warmth, palmettos and beaches.
And I second those prefer to vacation in SC and live in VA. I would live in a DC suburb in Northern Virginia and wouldn't choose to live anywhere in SC. Not even the Charlotte suburbs. DC is the only reason I would live in VA. I would prefer Baltimore though
I guess it'd be fair also to ask Tennessee also.
