It's a motto from hundreds of years ago; I'm pretty sure no study was done then either.

And it makes sense that such a motto no longer applies since the conditions are wholly different now versus the 1700's. NC has now become the larger, most prosperous state between the three and it has the bragging rights--which it exercises.
