SC is the neighbor throwing the parties, with the slightly cluttered lawn and overgrown grass, but will always let you borrow a tool and is cool to hang out with. VA is the neighbor who always calls the HOA on you and complains when you forget to cut your grass after 7 days, but who you trust to feed your pets when you're out of town.

It's a motto from hundreds of years ago; I'm pretty sure no study was done then either.
And it makes sense that such a motto no longer applies since the conditions are wholly different now versus the 1700's. NC has now become the larger, most prosperous state between the three and it has the bragging rights--which it exercises.
