I've never been to a Wegman's (and hadn't even heard of it until reading about it here on CD) but it seems to be one of those grocery stores that has a groupie kind of appeal, similar to Trader Joe's. I was talking to one of the cashiers at the Trader Joe's in Winston-Salem who said people will drive 2 hours from the mountains of NC and VA to come to that location. Based on all the accolades that I've read here on CD, I would suspect Wegman's would be similar.

I can actually see Richmond, Virginia being a candidate for Wegman's because, despite it's Southern history, it always feels like it's a gateway to the I-95 corridor of the Northeast (with proximity to DC and points north) more than it feels truly Southern. I'm guessing if Wegman's ever did come to NC, the Triangle would probably have the best likelihood of being a location because of so many transplants from the Northeast. Charlotte may be a close second. I agree with the comment about proximity to a distribution center being a deciding factor, though.

How silly. It's because these stores stock little if any food that Southerners like. Regional chains tend to do poorly outside their region.

They stock pretty much the same food you can get in Kroger, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, etc. and then some.

Do you mean things like bread, milk and eggs?

What is it that southerners eat that the rest of the country does not?

I don't think he was referring to the army. Just the location.
