So the Triangle and Triad are both roughly an hour south of the Virginia border. You see many VA license plates in both of these metros, but is it common for many NC'ers to visit Virginia in these areas? From my experiences around the Triangle, I'd say it isn't too common but what do y'all think? Maybe it's common but only for tourist sites such as Jamestown, Busch Gardens/Colonial Williamsburg, and Kings Dominion. Just curious, any opinions?

Default Yes

Virginia is wonderful compared to the poorly developed cities here in NC. We plan to move soon.

Very rarely do we visit Virginia. Visited Williamsburg once. Visited a friend in Lexington, VA once. Passed through on the way to DC and Baltimore a couple of times.

I did have a job offer in Washington DC a few years ago, which likely would have led us to relocate to Northern Virginia. I'm glad I turned it down - the commute would have been terrible, and housing prices much higher than here in NC.

I live in Mecklenburg and like to visit Virginia in the mountains around the New River area. It's ~ 1.5 hour drive from here up I-77.

Considering the hatred you display towards everything about NC in every post (and then have the gall to wonder why many in NC don't like Northerners, even as you exemplify a textbook case as to why), please do.

Seriously, can you explain more? North Carolina and Virginia are pretty similar states. If you don't enjoy North Carolina, you're probably not going to enjoy Virginia at all. Virginia cities and metros are much more historic, but they're not too dissimilar from NC metros in the long run. Most fit the "New South" description, some more than others in both states. The Triangle is a bit like Richmond and even Northern Virginia for one. Might have to go a bit further to the north (Maryland, Pennsylvania) to find whatever you're looking for.

It really depends on what part of VA (and NC) you are talking about as to whether or not it will be the same or different...I see the two states as very similar in some respects, but very different in others...

Northern VA is VERY different than the rest of the state. From my limited experience in the Triangle, the entire 95 corridor north of Richmond has much worse traffic and you can pretty much take that well west and east of the 95 corridor once you get north of Fredericksburg. The same goes for south east VA around Norfolk / Hampton Roads, etc.

There are also small towns and rural areas that are just as rural / small town as any I've visited in North Carolina. It is a beautiful and very historic state. I plan to visit it often even though I'm moving away. One of my sons will still be living there as well.
