I second Mikey_NC's welcome!
Of course you are 'allowed' to join -- (actually, anyone can join in) -- and there will be someone somewhere who'll post an answer to your questions.
Come back as you narrow down your requirements and let us know what's going on for your search.
After all, we're all searching for something, right?

I am real glad that so many people jumped on the RL-ST thread to post. To so many of us, the quieter life of the country is one of the greatest attractions of this beautiful state!

great headline, right out of a Robert DeNiro movie .

I was out today watching some of the local farmers disc up the land and start their winter cleanup. Next to me will be a bean farm (about 12 acres and across will be a cornfield (about 20 acres) and a cotton field (about 30 acres.)
I have a couple acres that are not being used for anything and believe that the bean farmer is interested in farming it, as it will connect to his 12 acres.
More food for him to grow and less land for me to tend. Keeps those snakes from getting too close too .

snakes??
Hi, Mikey_NC,
this is not the first post I've read about snakes. Don't you consider snakes to be beneficial? I'm not talking about poisonous ones, now, but the ones that'll eat rodents, etc.
Do you have to be worried about snakes getting into your house? Here in Florida, we had lived in a condo on the first floor, with a lanai (screened porch) that opened out to the back garden. When we were getting ready to move out, we shifted the sofa on the lanai, and behind it on the floor was a 3-foot long snakeskin. We never found the snake; just as well because although I don't mind snakes, having one in my house would've done me in!

and whatever other 'pests' are there?
Except for nasty bugs (like crab spiders, cockroaches, etc) here in Florida and the snakes (yes, coral snakes among others), most of the critters seems to be harmless (like the armadillos that dig in the lawn at night, the possums that have hidden in our woodpile, too-friendly raccoons that are so un-scared of people that they are foraging in the daytime, etc) -- please tell me what wild things do I need to keep an eye open for in NC?
I'm a long-time Yankee, so I'm used to raccoons, possums, skunks, foxes; have even seen bear at Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts and even an ermine at our house in Broome County, NY. I'm talking about the animals that pose a threat or that might be rabid.

Snakes are ok
No, I don't mind snakes at all as, like you say, many are beneficial. It's the poisonous ones I like to stay clear of. The Black Racers here keep them away and they also keep the field mouse population down to a minimum. They do have to compete with the farmers' barn cats as they are fierce mouse hunters. Most snakes stay away but every so often, especially in arid weather, look for water. In rainy season here they come out to "dry out" in the sun.

more on snakes
so do you mean that normal precautions are all I'll have to take?
Since our 'new' house won't have a pool, I won't be likely to experience what I did while swimming with my DH one hot summer evening. We were just lounging in the pool when I felt his hand on my shoulder, and when I looked around and saw him too far away to reach me, I kept turning my head....and there was a snake there on my shoulder. Somehow it'd gotten into the pool, probably to get water, and I was the nearest thing he could crawl up on to get out of the water. Well, I went straight up in the air, ran at full tilt across the surface of the pool, and waited for the echoes of my screams to die down.
Now, you're probably laughing, but it wasn't funny (my mother was so terrified of snakes that she wouldn't even touch the printed work 'snake' in a book, much less look at a picture of one, so I think I am doing pretty good here being able to pick snakes up from the caged pool deck on the end of a hoe and release them into the garden!)
