crime out in the sticks?
I've just been reading in the Charlotte thread about crime, and I want to know what kind of crime/anti-social behavior is the most common outside of the cities? I've checked on the City-Data stats and it seems like 'property crime' is the most prevalent.
And a second question (because I don't know where to go to find out first-hand): the poster on the Charlotte forum said he is always armed; what is the NC law about carrying a weapon, concealed or not? Do weapons have to be registered? Are gun-safety courses mandatory?
Thanks!

good -- the more, the merrier!
I think that those who live in suburbs of the bigger cities in NC would have some things in common with those of us on the RuralLife thread, if only a love of many aspects of rural life from afar (like the occasional weekend jaunt).
That's fine, too!
We can at least tell them where to find the attractions they are seeking. For myself, I am most interested in antique shops and flea markets, if anyone wants to start a list....

I cannot offer any stats about crime in rural areas, but the city closest to me has its share of crime, including murder, drugs, embezzlement, spousal abuse, and the list is endless. The only crimes I hear about way out here is an occasional moonshine bust, meth lab bust and some trafficking in crack and other drugs. B&E is not common in my area because the criminals know that all of us are well armed and know how to handle firearms.
In NC you need a permit to carry a concealed weapon and have to take a mandatory firearms training course. Permits are good state wide but must be applied for at your county sheriff's office. There is no gun registration here in NC.
Visit your county sheriff for a packet of information on gun laws and read them carefully. They explain in detail what your rights to defend yourself are.
If I can find the right link I will post it in this thread.

As far as I know, and this is one for the local PD, I believe you can transport an unloaded gun from your home to a dealer and back or to a gun club and back...but I am not positive...just giving you my opinion is all. I would
not suggest transporting any firearm, pellet guns and bb guns included unless you know the exact parameters of the law.
Here's that link on firearms laws:

thank you for the info, Mikey_NC,
I've saved the link to my NC file to read later. I sure don't want to start off living in NC as a law-breaker!

NcMommy:
I hope that your dh gets the better of the two offers
2 hope your home sells ASAP with a great offer and your new home can be bought at a price lower than you anticipated
3 LOL...ours are all grown and flown away..so all I can say is..."good luck"
All this rain has germinated all the seed that has been sitting in the ground since we moved into our new home last July. The landscaper assured us it would eventually grow but that it needed a lot of rain, and that watering wouldn't be enough. He used some sort of Kentucky fescue with a heart Georgia mix and added in fertilizer and some nutrients. We are grateful as I dreaded the thought of having to till and re-seed 2 acres of lawn.
By the way, can you tell me what a sidewalk or a curb is???
The Bride and I are off for a country ride, ie: a ride through our extended neighborhood, as we want to know where every road takes us.

New Year's traditions
Mikey_NC mentioned a ride in the countryside for today. Is that a holiday tradition for the two of you? We used to do that every New Year's Day when I was a kid in Connecticut. Here in Florida, we try to go to the beach on the major holidays.
What about everyone else? Anything special you like to do? Anything (besides those black-eyes peas) that is particularly North Carolinian?
Happy New Year to all!
