Just a late vote for a rural life thread.
Although we are in Orange County, we still have a rural, quiet life with some acreage. We also enjoy spending time throughout rural areas in NC.

Glad to have you and hope you will become a regular as I am sure there will be some folks interested in Orange County so you could assist when they ask questions about it. I am in Sampson County, further south from you and very rural, but, alas still not as close to the beach as we would like

Well, I am happy that you are so happy as happiness makes everyone smile! Now that you are on the way to a better life don't forget about us here in the Rural Life thread as once you move in you can be a valuable asset to those looking for information in YOUR county. There are 100 counties in North Carolina and we need every one to have at least one representative. I think I am the only one thus far in Sampson County...???
Again, your news is good and thanks for sharing it with us...

I will never forget the rurals out there LOL... its just odd that my county being Wake is not very rural and my new county being hopefully Johnston is somewhat rural but not totally.
I wish I could just paint a picture to understand the beauty of Willow Spring. Its just so green and filled with natural beauty.. nothing manmade. I can look out my window and see John Deere farm equipment instead of a traffic light. To me thats just something you can't beat unless you like red, amber and green.

Awwww....now I'm all wistful....
What a lovely thread! Just read every post and it caused me to remember the lovely mountain area in Northern Cali where I lived for about three years; it's one of my favourite places.
But I don't really qualify for this thread now, as I live in a SUBURB Moved here three months ago, and am havin' a major time of adjustment, lol. But there's an ancient saying "Glory to God for All Things" ~ Saint Ignatios (+107 AD) which I'm keeping in mind.
Sorry, that was off topic, but I wanted to Vent
I'll come visit when I need a country livin' moment. 's OK?

By all means visit and visit often. I have read many of your posts and you sure have a big ole country heart and that's all you need in here. Suburbs are just places not quite into the country...but they aren't cities either...

I believe you can build a decent home for $125/sq ft using a contractor who site builds. Remember that there are so many variables that enter into the cost but I do not think it will vary much from eastern to western NC.
If you can find a reputable local, small general contractor who will allow you to do some of the work yourself, you could come up with a great looking and comfortable living home. We found that the small guy, if he has a good reputation, will build a better, tighter, more energy efficient home than the big cookie cutter type builder. Dollar for dollar I would first recommend a builder of modular homes first. First go visit the modular factory so you can see how they actually build and then decide.
Our home was built for a retired couple so we wanted better than average carpeting, appliances and very energy efficient. List your priorities and run them by builders and see what they tell you. If they sound more like salesmen than builders....run, don't walk...away!
I am a semi retired construction engineer (commercial building) and speak from experience. If you have any questions before you build post away or dm me and I will assist.

Very interesting Mikey, thank you!
Would you care to share your very informed opinion on true modular homes? Do you see many in the rural area where you live?
