Okay, if you had to pick ONE TOWN that epitomizes our state, what would you pick? Forgetting tourism for the most part, just one town that is a perfect example of a North Carolina town. All of our culture, tradition, history, etc. What we're known for, what we're all about in the Tar Heel State. Just the perfect example. "If you really want to see North Carolina in a nutshell, just give (blank) a visit." I hope all of this makes sense, and it can be on a personal level. Maybe if you had a friend in town that is new to our state, where would you take that friend to really see North Carolina in your eyes?

It's a very diverse state. However...

IMO, If you can only go to one place then I'd say that would have to be the state capital, Raleigh. It's full of state museums, state universities, and the neighborhoods (the ones built before 1980) are about as NC as it gets. I would make Durham a close runner up.

Winston-Salem: rolling hills, four distinct seasons, great food, tradition meeting progress, big banking, great universities and colleges, diversity, and Mayberry (ice cream).

I personally would choose Wilmington however, I have a great fondness for Wilmington and spent about 3 months there one summer.

I love the architecture, the widow's walks, the graveyards, the USS Carolina moored there, the shops, the waterfront, the cobblestone streets, and even the Waffle House.

Winston-Salemm definitely. Great history of NC. Durham/Raleigh is also greatly considered of course. It just might be too difficult because NC is too diverse from east to west.

Another vote for Winston-Salem. It has history in Old Salem, typical industries nearby-- textiles and furniture making.

If you're selecting among the large cities, I'd agree. It's harder to choose one from among the mid-size towns, which there are many of and they are a lot alike. Asheboro, Sanford, Hickory, Salisbury type places.

Winston-Salem is a good candidate I think.

I think Asheboro is a true NC town.

There are a number of reasons...one would be the family feel you get and the nice people. It used to be a dry county, not sure if it still is.

But as well, it has the NC sprawl up and down its main road, but also has the older areas defined by its old manufacturing. It has a true community feel and is more long time "locals".

That being said, NC is more about transplants now, Interstates, and is becoming more diverse. I recall someone saying the "orange traffic cone" should be the official State "object".

Winston-Salem is a good candidate. I was actually thinking Burlington, possibly. Probably the best location in the state, very central with easy access to the Triad, Triangle, and Charlotte. A history of textiles, along with a lot of tobacco in Alamance County in general. LabCorp is in Burlington, bringing an RTP flavor to the area. Still has that NC country town vibe, not heavily populated by transplants. May not be the most exciting area, but a very typical North Carolina town in my eyes.
