Everything you will need to know is on this site in an easy to read format. Read this site 5 times and then print it out and read it while you are waiting while studying the street signs while you are waiting to take the test at the DMV and you'll be golden.

Cheers!
I gave this site to several transplants and two used this to pass the test on first try. Wish I had it when I relocated

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which office is the "best" one to go to? (That is: sit and wait in?)

Where I came from in NoVA, the DMV had a website that would tell you what the wait times were at the various locations before you even left the house so you could pick which one you wanted to go to. I would love to see something like that here (but I'm not going to hold my breath!)

Has anyone tried making an appointment for the driver's license thing?

I was gone less than 2 years...I wish I didn't have to go through all this hassle!!!

I went to the Mooresville office last month and they now have the computer based tests.

I am not sure where you are located in the area to advise the best location.
I use to get it done in Cabarrus or Rowan county but Cabarrus is sort of a hot spot for newcomers if you use that location I would go when they first open. You want to avoid afternoons due to workers getting off work and school students.

The one in Monroe isn't awful. Esp if you get there early. Avoid the one on Arrowwood, + the one on Brookshire freeway.

Sorry Sunny, I'm in Ballantyne. From what I hear the "close" options are the pits anyway.
