You heard bad things about GSO so you're passing these rumors on as facts? It doesn't even sound as if you've ever been to GSO.
This is not an opinion to place any bets on...

Thumbs up for Durham

There is so much to do and everything is kept up so well. The only area of Durham I avoid at night is east central Durham. That area is where you will find most of the crime. It is an area that has not kept up with most of Durham. If you avoid that area, you will find that Durham has so much to offer. Northern Durham County is very rural, with lots of land and farmhouses. West central Durham has Duke University and many older and very nice homes. Southern Durham is where everything new is located, including the fabulous Streets at Southpoint mall. Most of the people that bash Durham are people that do not live here. If you do not live here, you do not know how good it is. When trying to get advice on Durham, listen to people that live here, not people that like to bash from afar.

Thanks for sharing your comments on Durham.
I'm a Durham native and I couldn't have said it better myself. I have lived in Durham all of my life, save about 6 years that I lived in Dallas. I LOVE Durham...I love its diversity (which many other areas of the triangle simply lack), its culture, its heritage, its people, etc. Durham is full of creative, well-educated, nice, down-to-earth people.
I'm 35 yrs old and I've never been a victim of any violence, theft, criminal act and never felt threatened in Durham. We leave our house un-locked when we're home (and often times when we're not!). We leave the front door open with just the storm door closed. Children in the neighborhood play outside without fear. Really, the persistent stereotypes about Durham are founded on such a small section of Durham, it is really a shame. I get tired of Durham being pegged as the armpit of the triangle by the media, the real estate agents, people who don't live here (and some who have never even visited), but just perpetuate the stereotype, etc.
Yes, Durham does have a drug and crime problem, but it honestly doesn't affect most residents’ day-to-day life. Most of the violence is against people who know each other. There aren't a lot of random acts of violence.
And the public schools do need some work, but they're not all bad. And of course, there are always good private schools if you can afford it.
Anyway, just glad to hear someone else plugging Durham, it is a nice alternative to Raleigh, Cary and other points East with a shorter, less stressful commute to the Park. I should know, I commuted to Cary from Durham for 8 years and I always felt really bad for the traffic jammed up the opposite direction...especially on a Friday afternoon when everyone just wants to get home from work and start the weekend.
