JT in NC Goldsboro sucks.
I have been here in Goldsboro for 13 years and hate it. Just recently decided to move. Unless you have any ties to the Air Force and SJAFB, there really is no reason to be in GOldsboro. The crime is high, drugs, prostitution, breaking and enterings everyday in the paper. Too many projects and low income run down. If you want a decent paying engineering job, Goldsboro is not the place to be. What about Raleigh?? The school system here is aweful too, if you have kids you don't want them in the public school system in Goldsboro. Trust me, take it from someone that knows...look elsewhere. Raleigh, Greenville, Wilmington....anywhere but Goldsboro.

Marie,
Saw that you included Smithfield as one of the worst.
Give me some info please.
We have heard from a couple of people who say the town is changing for the better and some who say it is a toilet.
You?
We have our hearts set on Calabash/Shallotte area. We been to the Smithfield/Selma area a couple of times and the home prices are not real bad.
New developments seem to be going up.
Any help is appreciated cause we are about three weeks away from putting the sale sign in the front yard.
Thanks,
Dennis and Judy

I could see not liking certain parts of it, but that's true with any city.
Greensboro isn't boring (life is what you make of it) and it's certainly not a "hellhole". In my opinion, to be a "hellhole" it'd have to be overrun with crime - drivebys all over the city, holdups and car jackings anywhere you go, bars on all the windows, etc. (When I think of "hellhole" I think of places like Camden, NJ and even Fayettville, NC to an extent.) There are a lot of beautiful areas in Greensboro and there's plenty to do.
Really, I was scratching my head at the negative comments about Greensboro. I don't get that at all.

Niki.
"Hellholes".
Camden NJ?
Been a police officer there for the past 30yrs.
You must read the papers and watch a little TV.
You know your "Hellholes".

Favorite NC Cities: Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Asheville and Tryon (not a city, but a quaint, beautiful little town).

Hello,
I am thinking of moving to NC from New York (I live right outside the city). Can anyone tell me good places to look? I am in my mid-20's and would be moving with my finance because his job so we want to stay close to they city so it's an easy commute and there are still plenty of things to do.
Also, is crime a big problem in NC? If so, where? I've seen a few surveys and it looks like some areas aren't very safe...?

The short list like this is helpful. A short one-liner, as to why each town makes it onto a given list, would make it even more helpful. Thanks.

Salisbury for us!
We were looking for a medium size town with historic character and affordable homes and decided to purchase a home in Salisbury. We are close enough to both the coast and the mountains for a quick get-away, yet we don't have to worry about hurricanes or outrageous home prices.
Salisbury is maintained very well, has several historic districts, and is close enough to Charlotte for bigger city entertainment.
