Halifax is definitely pretty southern, no doubt about it. Same with Nash. Go northeast of Raleigh and it becomes very rural (ever been out to Hollister, NC?) and more culturally southern, Warren is another county that is a great example. If I'm not mistaken, the Eastern NC counties closer to Virginia had the most slaves. On the contrary, the Piedmont counties to the northwest of Raleigh relied more on textile mills and tobacco (after the Civil War, mainly).

Drive on Highway 70 from Raleigh to New Bern if you ever question the southern identity of North Carolina.

Hertford, Edgecombe, Scotland, Montgomery, Bladen, Sampson, Columbus, Stanley, Robeson, and Richmond county are deep south-ist areas of NC. I seen alot of farms and grave yards in the front yard of homes in Hertford county.

Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett County have some deep south-ist areas, but alot of homes are being built in those areas bc of the military. The military is changing the dynamics of the area.

Moore County reminds me of a small town preppy area. Moore County is geared for retirees and alot of people play golf in Pinehurst. Alot of retail stores and restaurants in Aberdeen. My coworker told me that certain towns in Moore Co (Pinehurst, Aberdeen) reminds her of Duluth, GA.

Most of Moore County is kind of in the Deep South-ish boat. It's not far from South Carolina, and isn't too dissimilar from the Sandhills across the border in SC. Pinehurst has many retirees, but it's also very "preppy southern" like a city along the lines of Charleston. Southern Pines and Aberdeen are looking more like Research Triangle suburbs as time goes by, though (retail stores, strip malls, chain restaurants).

Montgomery, Anson, Richmond, Hoke, Scotland, Robeson, Columbus, and Bladen might be the best picks for the closest counties to the Deep South in NC, IMO. Moore and Harnett are getting there, but Cumberland has Ft. Bragg. If it wasn't for Ft. Bragg, the Fayetteville area would definitely be more Deep South-ish. The top two are probably Robeson and Columbus IMO.
