We are retired and thinking of a move to the area to be near family in Vs. My wife doesn't want to move to Va but is OK with NC. We are Floridians but want to make a change. WILL be up to look around in Aug but want to know what areas to see or avoid.

Reason: spelling error
RR is small, very economically depressed town. The crime rate and unemployment rate are well above the state average, and the median household income is below the state average. My mother is from there, and I can't imagine living there. If you have to be in that area, I understand there are some nice places out on Roanoke Rapids Lake or Lake Gaston.

What's wrong with Virginia? Roanoke Rapids is five to ten miles from Virginia! Also, why Roanoke Rapids? It's not really nice, to be completely honest. I'd avoid it and look into other areas.

Yeah, not sure why she is so set on NC over Va, especially somewhere like RR. The whole eastern part of NC or VA is pretty similar, especially outside the major cities like Raleigh or Richmond. Whatever she has against Virginia, Roanoke Rapids probably has a lot of it.
Why is NC acceptable to her but not Va? They are essentially the same cultures outside the large metro areas like Northern VA, Richmond, The Triangle, and Charlotte.

Seriously! Roanoke Rapids is nearly identical to Emporia, Virginia right up the road. Also, I agree that North Carolina and Virginia aren't too different. Even Raleigh is probably more like suburban Virginia over South Carolina.

hate to necro an old thread but just curious how bad it really is?
I have opportunity in Emporia VA, and family not too far (out near va beach), so while a longshot I'd move for it, its worth looking into.
Would rather live across the border in NC. (i know its not different but, for 3 kids to be in college some day id rather be 'in state resident' of NC.
First quick scan Roanoke Rapids looked like my only real option, and the schools don't look that great.
Well, if my choice was between RR and Emporia, I'd probably go with RR. You might want to look into Franklin, VA. It may be nicer.
I agree. Another advantage of Roanoke Rapids is not having to deal with Emporia's notorious speed traps everyday. That town is always hungry for revenue.
thanks for the responses. i did read about that speed trap business a few times while i was reading old threads lol.
i guessing just wondering is RR schools 'bad' as in a dangerous, drug ridden place or ..safe enough just not great at preparing for the standardized tests? They still have all the extracurricular etc?
Franklin is out because we have to be at least an hour and a half from the sisters. Far enough where you don't come drop by, but you can go have thanksgiving. Franklin is under half an hour from her, and her 5 kids, and me babysitting 3 times a week (no thanks!) when she has stuff to do, and an hour turns into all day..
What I have heard about Roanoke Rapids schools is that you want to be IN TOWN. Schools in town are better than the county schools, which means you have to live in Roanoke Rapids city limits. The County schools are supposedly some of the worst in the state. And I have heard mixed reviews with Weldon schools.
On that note, the Roanoke Rapids High School is a very unique building and a pretty cool in-town setting.
