Cool Mt. Airy. NC

Hello, I'm new to City-Data. My daughter whom is a single mother is looking into moving to Mt. Airy becuase of the cost of living and she wants an old farm house. How is the schools there? And, it it an area that is diverse? My daughter has a bi-racial son & I worry that sometimes small towns are less accepting. I'm a mom & worry about my daughter & grandchild. I've looked on this site for postings but haven't found anything. I hope that doesn't mean it's a bad sigh. ha ha

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the schools. Like nearly any small town outside of a metro area anywhere in the nation, it's not diverse. That doesn't make it a "bad" area, but it's just the nature of small towns. I do understand your concerns, though. Would she consider a "small town" within a metro area? There are some of those here in NC that are affordable and welcoming to all people.

I live in the Charlotte area, and some great towns around here are Concord (where I live), Mooresville, and Ft. Mill. They have homes in most all price ranges, they're safe, and have great schools. I go to a large church here in Concord, and there are many mixed race couples/families who attend. You'd be very welcome here. The Asheville and Raleigh areas are very good places as well. Maybe some others on this forum from those areas can give you some insight on some affordable towns where they live. Good luck on your search!!!

Yes, it's the hometown of Andy Griffith and the model of the TV show. If a true small town outside a metro is what someone is looking for, Mt. Airy is a great place to live. We visit there often. Some of the businesses on the show are actual businesses that have been (and still are) around well before the show ever aired (Blue Bird Diner, Walley's Service Station, Floyd's Barber Shop, ect). It's a very sweet, pretty, neat-as-a-pin town. There aren't any friendlier people in the world. There's a lot to see and do on a day trip there.
