Default No inspection sticker for a year-I wasn't aware

So I just found out that my car was not inspected. I bought the car out of state in february of 2007. I thought the state I bought it from just got in inspected for me and that it was good for a year and that I would have to get a sticker the next year(new to NC). I never got a sticker...and now it's been registered in NC for almost a year without an inspection sticker. Can I get it inspected here, and not get fined-I haven't received any letters that I know of. I would expect the DMV would send a letter.
Since it's never been inspected, I'm thinking I can go ahead and do it and be fine...but someone told me you only have 10 days once you register it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Ignorance of laws of a state you are moving into does not fly well in court.
Regardless if your car was or was not inspected in the state you use to reside in you still have to comply with North Carolina law and the time limit on inspections.

Just go get it inspected. If they slap you with penalties, oh well. Don't wait for DMV to get in touch w/ you - I think the penalty is maybe $250 or maybe more. Just go get it inspected - the longer you wait, the bigger potential for problems. A highway patrolman can pull you over and give you a ticket for an elapsed inspection sticker at any moment. Do it and if you end up w/ penalties you just will. It has to be taken care of regardless!!!!

Best you head to an official NC vehicle inspection station first thing in the morning and have it inspected. You may just require the standard inspection but if you need the added emissions control inspection the inspection agency will tell you. Once this is done you are at least on record as having an inspected (hopefully passed) vehicle and any penalties should be minor if at all.. Like it has already been said in here, ignorance of NC laws doesn't fly well here so any time you waste will go against you in a court of law.
