Death toll is 6-9 people in Columbus co., NC. 12 are in critiacal condition. Many are kids.

Columbus Co is under another tornado warning right now.

And BTW, that 1984 tornado killed more than 100 people from Sampson to Pitt Co. two F-5 tornados moved through that year. Worst outbreak in NC history.

There have been several big tornado events in the state the 1984 event was huge. And then there was that one freakish F-4 Tornado around 1:00 AM the night of November 28, 1989. It tore through parts of north Raleigh injuring dozens destroying a K-mart on Glennwood Avenue. And killed 4 people damaged 2500 homes and stayed on the Ground for over 80 miles.

My heart goes out to all of the people effected by the tornado that ripped through Columbus County yesterday. I can't imagine the pain these people are feeling right now. I was shocked when I saw the map listing tornado counts in NC! Wow, I had no idea there were so many!

Actually, the map is way under done. There has been many more Tornados than that during that time span. Many Tornado's happen in the rural areas and forests and nobody ever knows they happen. Other Tornado's happen and people never report them. My grandmother lives in Wilson Co. A Tornado ripped through their farm back in 1983, doing tons of damage. We never reported it though. So it is not mentioned on that list.

Great info mm34b. And looking at the number of your posts, you must have been in NC a long time, so I'm sure you have lots of good info. I've read many of your other posts, are you a native NC ?

No, I moved to NC from Southeastern PA in 1960, but haven't lived here continuously. I have 16 years total in NC, 6 years in the Piedmont Region, 6 years in the Eastern Plain Region and 4 years in the Mountain Region.

Most Favorite - Asheville area.
Mountain topography, Appalachian people and their mountain culture, hardwood trees, four season climate, but not too hot and not too cold.

Least Favorite - Fayetteville area.
Flat land and way too hot during summer months.
