My boyfriend and I, both 26 years old, are planning a move to North Carolina late 2016/early 2017. I have begun doing research on the various areas of the state and have narrowed it down to the suburbs of Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro. A few areas which particularly stood out to me include Cary, Winston Salem and Chapel Hill. We are looking to be relatively close to a large job market that a city has to offer, while still experiencing the serenity of a 'smaller' town.

I work in hospitality marketing, currently at a country club with plans to move into the travel industry. My boyfriend currently works the warehouse of a mechanical machinery company, but plans to become a police officer. We would both prefer a commute under one hour each way.

As far as housing costs we plan to purchase either a condo or townhouse. Any suggestions for new/fairly new town home units in a safe area up to $150,000? Or condo units between $50,000-80,000?

Theres no point in looking at specific houses 2 years in advance, although you aren't going to find anything you want to live in for $50,000 to $80,000.

Secondly, none of the places you mention are technically suburbs. All 3 are full cities, although I suppose one could consider Cary a suburb of Raleigh. Winston-Salem is nearly as large as Greensboro...its definitely not a "smaller" town, at least by NC standards. Cary and Chapel Hill are also 2 of the most expensive cities in NC as far as housing costs.

Find jobs, then figure out where to live. Some smaller towns you could live in around Charlotte include Gastonia, Rock Hill, and Kannapolis. Around Greensboro: Asheboro, Thomasville, Pleasant Garden. Raleigh: Garner, Knightdale, maybe Holly Springs or Fuquay Varina.

Thank you for your reply! Right now I am more looking into the various areas, rather than the actual home units. However, I have surprisingly found a large selection of condos in the $50-$80K price range, many of which have been newly renovated. My only problem is that it is hard to judge the surrounding area when I have not physically been there and seen it. We actually are planning a trip to NC in December, starting in Raleigh, to look around and get a better idea of the area. I was just hoping to confirm the areas we were looking in were well established/safe areas which you have confirmed for me, so thank you!

You're welcome. I'd be very surprised if a condo at that price was in a decent, safe neighborhood, but its certainly worth looking into. Best of luck and post back if you have other questions.

Yeah, there's no use asking specific questions if you're going to be coming to see for yourself, and if you won't be moving for awhile. If you know very little about the area, what has put NC in your sites to start with? (PS--people don't say "Carolina" [referring to your subject line] to mean "NC"; they say "NC" "Carolina" usually means the University of NC, or University of SC if you're in SC)
