I believe they're only expanding to NC because half of the Triangle is from New York and the surrounding states.
The CEO even said in his official announcement that he was looking forward to seeing so many former customers upon the opening of the 4 Triangle Wegmans.
The same can be said of other metros in NC. One of the family members has been wanting to go down to Florida. They need a 2nd distribution center. If they are going to Florida it will probably be in NC. If not, it will probably be in VA, with a 3rd further south, eventually. My guess is that they will not make final plans for North Carolina until one store opens in the state.
Wegmans now has plans for a handful of stores in North Carolina
Wegmans can’t get enough of the Triangle area in North Carolina.
The Rochester-based grocer is adding to its plans for four new stores in that area with a fifth location in Wake Forest.
The grocer has signed a purchase agreement for land and is in the midst of seeking municipal approval for a store that would anchor a larger mixed-use development, to be built by Stiles, a commercial real estate firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Wegmans doesn’t have a timeline for the project yet, according to a news release from the company. The store will total 100,000 square feet.
"We look forward to the day when we can greet new customers and welcome back those who have shopped with us in other areas before,” stated Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans’ senior vice president of real estate. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring incredible customer service, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and consistent low prices to Wake Forest in the future.”
The new store adds to Wegmans’ growing footprint in the Triangle as the company seeks to expand into the Southeast. Construction is currently underway on a Wegmans 11 miles to the south, on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh. Wegmans typically opens just three stores each year, and the Wake Forest Road location will be one of those in 2019, making it North Carolina’s first.
Two more are being planned in Cary — one at the mixed-use Fenton project and another at the new Twin Lakes Center on the west side of town. Developers recently scaled back the size of the latter by 27,000 square feet in a move they said was in step with larger grocery store trends.
Another Wegmans location is being built in Chapel Hill at the former Performance AutoMall site, funded in part by incentives from the town and county.
Wegmans operates 98 stores, including 46 in New York state, 17 in Pennsylvania, 9 in New Jersey, 11 in Virginia, 8 in Maryland, and 6 in Massachusetts.
I'm certain they will do very well in this market. Their business model and wide selection will appeal to a large percentage of Triangle consumers that aren't satisfied with Harris Teeter, Lowes, nor Food Lion.
It's surprising they're pushing so aggressively without having a single store open yet but the locations are key. I'm sure they'll do fine.
With so many transplants from upstate New York (Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse) and Pennsylvania, and an almost "cult-like" following, those NC Wegmans stores will be making money hand over fist!
