North or South Carolina?
Was thinking of moving to NC...but several people have told me SOUTH Carolina might be better as far as economic growth and future potential. What does everyone here think?
I've read that NC taxes are higher and there have been more job losses than South Carolina has had, and that Greenville, SC in particular is still growing by leaps and bounds.

Actually, the NC population growth rate in NC is higher, especially so in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas. There has been some textile job losses, but net job growth in NC is one of the strongest in the nation. Charlotte's airport is on of the nation's largest, which draws A LOT of high paying jobs and corporate relocations, and will continue to do so. Those types of things keep economies humming for years to come. Taxes are lower in SC, but not by that much. Average income in NC is higher. I'm by no means bashing SC. They're a great state and I'd recommend it to anyone. It's just the numbers on the stats you mentioned do go in NC's favor. A good compromise would be living in Charlotte's southern suburbs in SC (i.e. low taxes) and work in Charlotte.

It really depends on what YOU are looking for and your reasons for moving. There are parts of SC that are gorgeous. Both states have beach front and mountainous regions, small and large cities.

Reasons:
Better climate
Better economy
Better more like-minded (conservative) people than in the rustbelt

Yes, airports were another inquiry.
Georgia could work...Gulf Coast of Florida is too expensive, plus I still like a change of seasons.
Virginia is too expensive in the big city areas, but Charlottesville might not be bad.

Housing prices have been steadily dropping in and around Charlottesville. Watch out for taxes, though. That area went through recent real estate reassessments so you'll see many houses listed for *under reassessed value* which doesn't really mean a lot if the house isn't well priced. On the other hand you get so much more for your tax dollars there than you do in most areas of NC. There is a glut of housing on the market there and if you buy this winter you should be able to get a really good deal. Look into Keswick, Gordonsville, Ruckersville unless you prefer to live in the city itself. Also Charlottesville has more plentiful and better paying job opportunities than the Triad area of NC does, IMO and experience.
There are some truly beautiful areas outside of but close to Charlottesville. Mountain views. Close to the astonishingly beautiful northern Shenandoah Valley too. So much to see and do!
C-ville has an airport but the two biggies are Dulles and Reagan National closer to D.C.
Best wishes!
Regards,
Cassie

I'd never expect Charlottesville to have that many economic opportunities being a small city 2 hours from DC...but I'll have to give it a second look.

Charlottesville is a bit expensive. Charlotte has one of the top/busiest airports in the nation.
