We hope to be back in NC next year and I would really like to work outside of the Fort Bragg/Fayetteville medical systems. I have been looking at hospitals in Raleigh. We lived in what was considered West Fayetteville (near Hope Mills) when we lived there last time. Ihe drive up to Raleigh from our home was at least an hour and twenty minutes. When adding that on to a 12 hours shift, it's just too much.
I was looking at some of the neighborhoods up hear the completed portion of the 295 bypass (near Methodist), but when I search commute times on Google Maps it gives me estimates of around an hour and 10 minutes. How can that be possible? That is almost what it took when we were living on the other side of town, and it took us at least ten minutes to get to I-95 from where we lived and that was only if traffic wasn't bad!
Does anyone on here live in or very near Fayetteville and work in Raliegh - if so, how long is your commute and what part of town are you staying in?
I think when you first look at a map Raleigh and Fayetteville look reasonably close to each other but it's 60 miles from downtown to downtown even if you take the straightest line (55/210/401). Living in southern Wake county I've had neighbors who work at the base and they would say about 40-50 minutes but they are traveling the opposite direction.
Not nearly as bad as the Burlington-Wilson commute would be for another poster.....not ideal but doable. There are people who do that.
It's probably much more common for people to work in Fayetteville and commute from Raleigh (or southern suburbs like Holly Springs or Fuquay) though. Fayetteville isn't really known for being a great place to live....
I'm wondering why if you would be looking to live in Fayetteville if you are looking to work at hospitals in Raleigh
I used to commute to Raleigh from the Fayetteville area. I lived on the border of Spring Lake and Sanford. It was smooth sailing hoping on US 1 into the Raleigh area. My schedule was flexible so I didn't often run into traffic other than the heavy stuff that you run into in the RDU area. I'm not sure how rush hour would be on the highway inbetween the two cities though.
I've done the trip in a little over 40 minutes. Less if you have a lead foot. Lol
We had thought of living more towards Raleigh - and really like the Apex region, but my husband will be on Bragg every day and I won't be making the commute every day. We haven't ruled it out entirely. Apex probably won't work because it is 60 miles, just too far to have to show up at a moments notice. He is in a situation where is he pretty much always on call.
We had some rough times in Fayetteville the last time we lived there, but more than any other place we've been it felt like "home". Strange because we spent so many years avoiding Bragg like the plague! We really love North Carolina though and would like to just be settled somewhere.
I am looking at the Raleigh hospitals because I have worked in the Cape Fear Valley system (not impressed), and the GS system (not perfect, but that pay was good). I may end up in the GS system again on post, but I am trying to go back to school and there are no part-time positions in my field. So, if I want to go to school full-time and work part-time and stay out of the CFV system I am left with Moore Co. or Raleigh. We just really liked Raleigh when we visited, and it's facilities offer care to higher acuity patients.
I know people who are similar situations (husband on base, wife works in raleigh) that live in Clayton. Apparently that's a fairly decent half way point. May be worth considering.
I've seen 2 people say they've made the trip in 40 mins. How in the hell? I made this commute for about a month when I got my job in RTP - it consistently took about am hour and a half. I think the very fastest time I got was 55 minutes and that was speeding heavily. It's not a nice commute, very boring and long. I wouldn't do it for too long.
Snuggler, don't discount the Moore County hospital. My aunt received care there and it was tons better than CFV where she was also treated (as was my dad). I would say the Moore County hospital is the best small hospital I've been to. It's not Duke caliber, but way better than Cape Fear Valley. The people we saw there seemed happy to work there, too.
Have you looked at Sanford? It's 40-45 min to Bragg and 40-45 min to the Triangle. (LH, I think that's what Glitterific was talking about — hwy 1 to Raleigh from the Sanford area).

I just looked at homes in Sanford last night and the high schools this morning. It looks like a real possibility. It seems to be a good mid-point between Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Pinehurst. It leaves me open for any direction. I have only heard good things about Moore Regional, too. Sanford in general is showing as 55 min to UNC REX, and 45 min to Moore Regional, and 45 minutes to Ft. Bragg.
Any thoughts on the town of Sanford? The older posts I have read on this forum are generally neutral to negative in tone, remarking on the need for a revitalization. Has that happened at all for Sanford?

I have relatives in Sanford and visit often. If you were looking at the suburban portion, rather than the city limits of Sanford, you can have a nice life. The Lee County High School is acceptable but not great, and some relatives like Lee Christian Academy.
The city portion looks run-down, but it is not horrible. There are a couple of festivals and Temple Theater live productions which bring some interest to downtown. Just don't expect it to be vibrant and hip.
