Whats with Laurinburg/Scotland County ?
Does anyone actually live there or know anyting about the area? This is my fourth post without a response. I would settle for rumors about now. Maybe they don't allow computers? Please tell me anything you can about the area? Does SANTA go there? THANKS STEVE

Apparently, the 2006-2007 property tax rate for Scotland County is 1.1000 per $100. That's the highest in North Carolina. Why?????

Hi Steve,
I don't think that anyone is deliberately ignoring your posts. Most of the posters on the NC forum are newcomers, or like yourself, seeking information about an area, or planning to move to NC, so they probably know about as much about Laurinburg as I do... which isn't much.
Most of the limited information I know can be found by doing a google search, which is how I found it:
http://www.laurinburg.org/
or by looking at the City Data information page for Laurinburg.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Laurin...-Carolina.html
Cut between bracketed [/url] and paste into your browser. You can try google to see what other information is available. S'all I have time to look up.
Given the high unemployment rate, (10.9 % in 2004) highest tax rate in the state, and a few other things you can delve deeper into, I can't say that it would be #1 on my hit parade as a place to move --- but to each his own.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Cassie

Steve,
I don't live in Laurinburg, but have lived in central NC for close to 20 years and have been to Laurinburg for a few soccer games, and also know a couple of people who lived there in the past.
My impression of it has always been that unless I had ties to the area (e.g. family or job), there really wouldn't be anything there that would draw me to it. It doesn't seem like a horrible place or anything, just nothing particularly charming or appealing about it. It is not close enough to the Triangle or Charlotte or the beach to sell it on location either.
To sum up, the people I know who used to live there didn't seem very sad to leave Laurinburg, even if they were going to another small town.

Ah Laurinburg!
I work in Laurinburg, NC... It is typical small town. Everyone knows everyone and there is no hiding or they will think the worst. The cost of living is a little high due to the very high tax rate. You can find a nice house for a decent price just be prepared to pay the taxes! The folks there are nice but talkie. The town has every fast food restarant you could want and some you don't. As far as nice places(no tray) you are very limited, you will have to go to Fayetteville (wear your seat belt and side arm) or Southern Pines (take your wallet). There is a large hospital and St Andrew's College. The schools system is large (Scotland co. is large land area wise) It is also a very diverse group...Anything else?? yeh tons but move down and you will figure it out by the end of your first year And as for Santa I heard he works in the library there but he is grouchie

I suppose by now you may not be looking at this but just in case someone else does. I moved here almost 2 years ago from San Diego, CA. My husband has his mom and sister here, or we would not have moved here. As was stated, it has the highest unemployment rate and tax rate in the state. The cost of living is low but so is the income level. If you have a home to sell, you can move here and get a nice home, but don't expect to move here and be able to find a job that pays well enough. That is more the exception. Jobs are leaving the burg not coming. The only major shopping is Wal-mart and Lowe's. For a Target, Old Navy, or a mall period you have to drive to Fayetteville or Pinehurst area. There are not a lot of things for families to do. And teenagers tend to have problems finding appropriate things to do that they don't tire of. The only movie theatre is very rundown, at least it is only $2 but it only shows two movies.
Most people are nice, but there were lots of nice people in San Diego and many more things for people to do, including free activities. My recomendation, if you are thinking of moving to this area "just because" you want to move, don't. We have already talked several times about leaving but want to be near his mother because of her health and I don't want to move my teenager again.

I agree with you...I lived in Bennettsville and hated every minute of my life there. I live in Southern Calif. now and we will be moving back to NC but will be inthe Charlotte area....

I go to school in Laurinburg. SAPC is a Scottish heritage college because a lot of the people in the area have Scottish background (thus the county name). It's small, but at least we have a Wal-Mart.

Laurinburg is a hole
I had the unfortunate experience of living there for 5 years. I have never been so miserable as that time in my life. It is awful, poor, and backward. We moved a couple of years ago and still have not been able to sell our house which is a nice 4 bedroom but the market tanked (not that I ever saw it really good). I would advixe that unless you plan on dying there, rent don't buy!
