Isn't all this pointless since it isn't even OP's property?

Good heavens, no. The OP can pass along all the useful comments and suggestions that have been made. I don't think the OP was asking a rhetorical question.

Just saw this about how it is hurting small business owners in NC who oppose HB2 when people boycott the state: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/14/op...i-despise.html

Not only hurts bookstores and small business owners, but a lot of others when people boycott NC. Think of all the people who who work concessions, etc. at the concerts and performances that were cancelled. Think of all the restaurant and hotel workers who miss out when conferences are pulled.

The bigger picture is the impact it will have on small and large businesses over time. The more this drags out in the courts and the court of public opinion, the more NC is viewed as an unwelcoming place for any but RW folks.

Unable to change the law, some will decide to avoid NC.

Whether HB2 impacts the vacation rental business remains to be seen.

Marla Tambellini, vice president of marketing at Asheville's Convention and Visitors Bureau: >> "... the marketing team is seeing a reduction in media interest in Asheville as a destination. She said one staffer had to scale down a media tour in Ohio after contacts that had previously expressed interest in her visit stopped responding.

“You can understand why media outlets would be reluctant to showcase a destination in a state that is getting so much negative attention right now," she said. “We’re concerned about that going forward."

Tambellini and Brown said they have never seen a political issue affect tourism this drastically, not even Amendment 1, a legislative attempt to ban same-sex marriage in North Carolina that was found unconstitutional in 2014.<<

Maybe their price is too high. Or maybe it's just too early to worry about it.
Also, a lot of weekly rentals are returning customers-people stay there once, and go on and book the same week the next year. So it may take some time to build up a regular base.

But, I DID see an article from some beach that HB2 is affecting their business. However, people who have already put down a deposit on a place are not likely to cancel it over something like that in most cases, though they may refrain from coming back to NC again until it's repealed.

This is what I think will happen. There will be a little fuss and bother, but few people are willing to forfeit a security deposit, regardless of the reason.

So they will come this year if they already have reservations. Next year will be another matter.

So it depends on how long this drags on.

Security deposits are returned if you cancel with enough notice. We love the beaches in NC. That said, the beaches in SC are just as nice and just as accessible. If NC starts becoming a depressed economy, it won't be nearly as appealing to visit.

Isn't it ironic (and more than a little sad) that SC is now the "good guy" in comparison to NC, when it wasn't that long ago that SC was toxic because of the Confederate flag flying at the capitol in Columbia?
