Avoiding NC
If you stick to the larger towns and the areas close to cities, you will find that most are populated by northerners. Chapel Hill would be very attractive to you. Apex, Cary, all the areas around Raleigh are very accessible. UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, Peace, Meredith, a university and college haven this part of NC. I lived in Henderson, Vance County-now in Wake County, a big change for the better.

I lived in NC for 12 years. I am of MiddleEastern descent(Persian) from DC, my wife is a white North Carolinian who I met there. We never had any problems other than the occasional stare which you'd get anywhere which get this, was mostly from MiddleEastern folks!! Out in rural NC, we'd get more looks and what not but I'm used to it, it can happen anywhere, it's mostly curiosity.
I"d check out Chapel Hill, Wilmington, Greensboro, Charlotte, and Ashville.
Good luck

North Carolina & Race
I am white with a black boyfriend. We have lived in Raleigh together ten years now. In Raleigh, I can say we have zero problems. No looks, definitely no stares or words spoken. I can honestly say, though, the further we get from the urban areas the more looks we get, although we have never had any "encounters". Any of the tourist areas (the beaches, the mountains) and any of the college towns are very diverse. Just make sure you do your research on the town/city you will be moving to. You want to make sure it has a good balance of ethnicities. And good luck!

my wife and i are an interracial couple who live in Philadelphia and Charleston SC. We experience more problems in Philly with people staring than we do in Charleston.
Yes, some people dont like it and are against it but they are few and far between and for the most part it is ok.
I am black and from SC and conservative, love football, NASCAR(understand it too) and love Red State values. I am interested in why one who is considering NC has to insult the state before they even finish giving it a chance.
Racism is just as prevalent in the Northeast--Boston and public housing, busing and Southie to name a few and pick up the Globe today and see how many issues of racism there is in the metro area.

My wife is Cuban and looks Hispanic, Indian or Middle Eastern (usually depending on who is doing the looking!) and I am your average chubby white guy. We've never had any problems during our visits to the Charlotte area (moving in Aug) and saw plenty of other interracial couples.
I grew up in Boston and my parents still live there, and oddly enough the first time we visited my wife (then GF) said it was the most uncomfortable place she's ever been in terms of people starring at us, and this was probably in 2003. I think Boston is still very racist and puritanical in many ways, and while there is numerical "diversity" most people tend to keep within their own "tribe." MA. is also consistently one of the highest income-earning states, yet has one of the lowest showings in the generosity index that measures charitable giving by state ( http://www.catalogueforphilanthropy....rosity_index/).
Not to turn this into a political discussion, but I think what many people folks here peg as "liberal" and "conservative" have little relationship to tolerance or respect towards your fellow human.

I have lived in the south most of my life and I am in an interracial relationship. It has been my experience you can find morons in any town large or small and although a town may appear more backward or "redneck" it doesn't mean they are racist. I think Raleigh has a great deal of diversity and Wilmington or Chapel Hill are also great areas to check out. The south is not perfect, but we are working on it. I actually have run into more issues in the Midwest.

Actually, some of the biggest racial problems in the nation over the last 15 years or so have been in the western U.S. (LA, Portland).

Let the fools stare. The demographics of America are changing and there is nothing they can do about it.

I don't travel to the west very much (except TX), but the Midwest can be a little different, its actually hard to find any minorities in some cities.

i agree with all of yall, and the northeast--man i thought going to an Ivy League University it was going to be utopia--forget it, the stares, the attitudes and the overt hostility to someone different and IR was palpable.
