you need to provide more details.

for one, a year ago you wanted to live in a small town, and were concerned about middle school/high school.

2hat is "much money"? How far out in the woods do you want - aka, do you need to be near any job? internet connection? etc?

Thanks for your reply. My daughter and grandson were wanting to move too, at that time. Now it will be just me, and if they come later thats fine. I love the country and I need to have trees, close enough to civilization since Ill be retirement age and still like my amenities. I think $10k for 3 acres would be fair, but then I dont know out there. Ive seen some online but dont know the areas. The structure will come later.

There is plenty of options for a place in the woods throughout this entire state. North Carolina has various terrains all have plenty of woods. Mountains, Foothills, central Piedmont, Sand Hills, Coastal Plain.

This site is allowable as any realtor in this state has listings with them, search 'Land Watch NC'.

OP,do you understand that land has to perk for a septic system, and you may have to spend $10K or more for a well?

I checked Landwatch, and many of the lots within your budget were on very steep sites which would be difficult to build on. I'd suggest planning to spend more on the land (like up to $20,000) and look for a site that has good road access, is fairly level and easy to build on. Rutherfordton County had some possibles.

When I was considering these issues I went another way:
Move to the woody outskirts of an actual city with those amenities...
but NEAR enough to the mountains for even day trips.
