I'd rather live almost anywher else in this state other than Fayetteville.
No offense to any Faynam natives.

I just recently moved out of Fayettenam after living there 8.5 years. It is a high crime area, overpopulated, bad drivers and high property taxes, but there's a pawn shop on every corner or a bar on every other corner. Also there's several Wal Marts and the mall and if you love to eat they have almost every restaurant you could want. I haven't had to deal with the schools but I hear they're not the best.

its a military town, so fairly transient- crime rate isn't the greatest, not the prettiest town- can't speak for the locals- I'm sure there are nice folks there.
If you decide to move, I would probably choose an outlying area (I'm not from that part of NC, so I can't help too much with nicer areas down that way).
It's not an area I would choose to move to, but thats just me. I'm sure some find it acceptable.
BIG change from NoVA, and in this case, probably a major culture shock and not sure if you would like it.

The drivers in Fayetteville are absolutely worse. I feel like my life is constantly in danger when on the roads there.

I can't dispute the fact that it gets a little crazy when you drive there. Its not fun at all but I promise you, the drivers in Fayetteville have absolutely nothing on the drivers in Greensboro.

You have a point there, haven't been downtown Greensboro but I have gotten onto I-40/I-85 from US 421 many times and have had to fight my way to merge into traffic because some of the drivers do not believe in common courtesy. Seems that whole stretch is made up of everyone in a hurry.
I'm surprised the ones who love Fayetteville so dearly (because that's all they know) have yet to get on here and defend their town.

Fayetteville isn't the prettiest looking town I will say that. However, the people ARE nice and you can find a decent home if you are willing to do the research. There is a lot of great realtors if you call All American Homes (the location on Reilly road). We worked with Eddie (I think the name is right), anyway he is awesome. I would not live in the Spring Lake area, avoid anything near Murchison road, and try to stay away from downtown. Sanford is a bit of a drive to the base (about 45 minutes ish) but there are some nice places out that way. If you go that direction (after going through spring lake) there are some nice places and a lot more land. The schools in Fayetteville suck. My kids weren't in them but I knew a few teachers in the area. There are also a lot of nice places out Ramsey street way. (not quite sure how to explain where that would be..hmm) If you look on a map it would be past the Methodist college and anything that way is nice. A friend of mine has a house on 7 acres out there. Nice and quiet, but not convienent to downtown or anything. Over 20 minutes to Fayetteville. But it all depends on what your looking for. And there are a lot of new neighborhoods that way. Or at least they were working on it while I was there! good luck!

Not ALL the schools suck. There are decent school districts in Cumberland County....check the board of education and look at the scores. I wouldn't live near Spring Lake, Fayetteville State, or out Bragg Blvd way past the mall area. But there are just as many good neighborhoods as there are bad. And EAST of Fayetteville is WONDERFUL country living, with the convienences of town close by.

I'm from the D.C. area and I would say I grew up between D.C. and Fayetteville. I can only speak on my experience. I have never encountered crime. However I know the hot spots (Murchison road fondly known as The Murch) is ruff. Bragg Blvd, closer to Fort Bragg isn't that great either. But if you live close to D.C. then you know about the crime up there. Fayetteville's crime is really not as bad as people make it. Drivers, again D.C. has more terrible drivers.
Okay honest opinion. Fayetteville doesn't have very much as far as things to do. Cross Creek Mall is the only mall around. But you have a lot of shopping centers in and around the mall. Also a Wal-mart on every corner. These places are around Skibo Road, Mcpherson-church and morganton road. However I have always found that the people are friendly and it wasn't a bad place to raise your kids. I've got family in Fayetteville, and now that I have kids I wouldn't mind moving there. However I am more big city type of person, so I would elect to move to Raleigh or Charlotte. East Fayetteville, Vander and Stedman have a country feel to it. Plus they putting up new houses that are half of what you have budget out for. I can't really speak on the schools. But just like in any city, if you want good schools you either send them to private schools or at least move into a good area. Point blank. All in all Fayetteville is not bad. I feel more comfortable leaving my doors unlocked and letting my kids out without worry, well at least certain parts. No matter where you go there is always an element of danger especially with child predators lurking. It's not D.C. or Northern Va, but if you need the city fix Raleigh is 1 hour 15 mins away. Can someone give me an example of how high the property taxes are? I've heard that a couple of times just need an example. Like 150,000 1300 a year for property taxes.
