You might consider Sanford, which is centrally located in NC and almost equidistant from Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham/Cary, and Fayetteville.
We have a huge military community here from Ft. Bragg that commute daily, and with the BRAC program coming in 2011, we expect several thousand new residents in the area in the coming couple years, many at lieutenant or above grade since Forces Command (FORSCOM) and U.S. Army Reserve Command (USARC) has been directed to relocate to Bragg by Sept. 15, 2011.
Sanford is a good small-sized city of about 30k population, with a lot of new investment going on due to our location and those that want more of a small town feel with access to the larger metro areas.
Housing is inexpensive, both old(historic, we have 3 National Register residential districts) and new, have most normal big-box retailers, and small business as well. We have a local theater(Temple) and mega-cinema. And again, if one wants "more" that the larger cities have, they are just 30-45 minutes away.
I hope that is helpful.

Sanford is nice, and the Grays Creek area is very attractive. I was stationed at Pope AFB for three years and enjoyed it.
You don't have to live in Fayetteville to work there, and the areas around it are often quite pleasant.

I grew up and lived in several areas of Fayettnam and I will agree that it is truly the armpit of the south. This town is littered with strip clubs, ex-military wives, bars, pawn shops, GI’s, thugs, drugs and criminals.
Here are some generalizations (yes, generalizations… this means in general or the stereotypical image)
The good:
Eastover, Stedman, Haymount, Cliffdale
The bad:
Hope(less) mills, Spring, lake
The Ugly:
East Fayetteville, Bonnie done, Murchison rd, Fayetteville State area, Ramsey st, Bragg blvd, Rosehill rd, Yadkin, Bunce rd, Groves st , pretty much the entire city.
Fayetteville does have some good points. Downtown is a lot safer then it once was many years ago. This area was once filled with Asian bars, prostitution and heavy crime. A few years back they demolished a lot of buildings and built a police station in its place. Unfortunately all the bars and crime relocated to Bragg Blvd to an area known as the “Asian U”. It is a U shaped strip mall style building with Korean bar after Korean bar. For a couple hundred bucks you can get a few OB’s and a happy ending if you’re lucky.
One other good point is that Fayetteville has seen rapid growth in recent years. Every time I go home there seems to be new construction.
If your not convinced just take my word and RUN! If you must live here I would suggest living in the far east part beyond I-95.
Good luck!

Lol Never heard it called the "Asian U", but I know where you're talking about. That's where Mickeys is located at, but I think they have more than just Asian women. I know a friend of mine turned 21 and was getting drunk/I was his DD and he got me to take him to Roses Lounge, despite me not wanting to be there. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
But yeah that whole area has hookers roaming up and down the streets all hours of the night. I always thought Hope Mills was ok.

Fayettevill's crime is nothing compared to Rocky Mount though. Rocky Mount just might be worse these days.

I live in Sanford and commute everyday to Bragg. It takes 30-45 minutes depending on how you drive. The towns get nicer the more north on 24/87 you go. Sanford is a good middle of the road between Bragg and Cary/Apex Raleigh/Durham. I don't venture into Fayetteville unless I have to. Its just as easy to head north and the towns are a higher quality. Bragg itself is nice. Parking and traffic can be an issue if you go to work when Soldiers come in for morning PT. Good luck
