A page out of Trump's book? Unsupported or half-true claims with no background. *yawn.

Affirmative action is government supported discrimination. Sorry it took so long to respond I have been laughing all morning at this.

That's false. The partisan head of the FBI later sent out an explanation.

Weiner's estranged wife also used the same computer. Thousands of her emails are on it. They don't know if there is anything new or not. He sent the notice to congress because he previously told them that the email investigation is closed.

Affirmative action has been a sore point with some white males for decades. It wouldn't have ever existed if most companies didn't exclude everyone except white heterosexual males in the past.

"Partisan head of the FBI'..... before he was accused of supporting Hillary by not prosecuting for all the offenses they found. Now because he is doing his job he's partisan again for re-opening the investigation. Poor guy can't win.

So your gripe is that white Christian males are legally discriminated against? So homosexuals and transgender should suck it up?

mmkay. That makes sense in a #whitepeopleproblems #grosslyoversimplified sorta way. If that's the hill you wanna die on I think you'll be a bit lonely.

He's a Republican, hired into the FBI by "W". He was promoted by Obama. Look up his background. When he said that there were not legal grounds for prosecution, it was because he couldn't find grounds that would stand up in court. People are getting sick of the Republicans wasting money in courts, much like Raleigh has been doing. Pass legal laws & you don't get taken to court.

This thread is supposed to be about HB2. It's another case of pass a legal law & it won't get shot down in court. Among the illegal aspects of it is that it stripped basic rights from the lgbt community that were given to them by cities. There is no reason to do that over a law concerning a handful of people & their use of bathrooms, other than meanness, spite, & disregard for others.

Affirmative action is not so easy to unravel. But if two candidates apply for med school, and one is clearly superior to the other in terms of qualifications, a decision to go with the lesser qualified because of race or sex is quite clearly discrimination.

An unfortunate and unintended consequence of AA is that capable, legitimately and competitively qualified black men never quite shake the stigma that they have gotten where they have because of AA, due to the lowering of standards so often to accommodate less able, less qualified black men. I knew the first black to earn a PhD in chemistry from Johns Hopkins. He was a very strong professional, but nevertheless had trouble with the AA stigma.

In the late 70's or so, the Chronicle of Higher Education had a report on hiring blacks to teach math. At that time, just about every math department in the USA was relentlessly recruiting black faculty. The same report published four photographs: these were the entire output of blacks receiving a PhD that year in math or math ed. That's it, just four.

So the thought was "grow your own;" in other words, admit black yewts as grad students and train them to provide future faculty for your department. My school lowered its requirements for admission to graduate study in order to accommodate a young black woman, hoping to keep her on after graduation. Unfortunately, she was not competent even for high school algebra, and had to be let go. What, exactly, did that accomplish for anyone involved?

And then there was a special program initiated by Western Electric in Baltimore (WE was the manufacturing part of the Bell Telephone System), with the object of employing ghetto people and training them, in order to give them a leg up. Turned out that most wouldn't show for work on time (no experience with alarm clocks, was the story), and would not report for work the day after payday. Needless to say, the project failed, as you cannot do manufacturing where everybody acts like a free agent. What was accomplished?

The point is that the situation is a lot more complicated than would be suggested by saying "everybody but white males" was excluded. Most normal women of at least middle-class circumstances, for example, had a really good life, and only reluctantly entered the workforce. See Elizabeth Warren's book The Two Income Trap (or something like that) to see why they have been drawn into the workforce, in many cases against their will. Many Jewish people were and still are so highly talented that they didn't seem to care much about AA for themselves one way or the other. And so it goes . . .
