Cullowhee or Goldsboro, NC
Hello,
I'm job hunting and comparing two opportunities. One is in Cullowhee and the other is in Goldsboro. I've been to Goldsboro but only twice for day trips. I haven't been to Cullowhee yet.
Can anyone tell me what either of these towns are like. If you live there do you enjoy the environment/atmosphere/people?
Thanks,
Nancy

I would choose Cullowhee. Very beautiful area/college town. But it's isolated. Could you work at the university (Western Carolina)? Goldsboro is one of the cities in NC having a rough time economically. Also, very hot/humit in the summer, and area is prone to tornadoes and hurricanes. What are the reasons you are looking in those areas?

I have a job offer at Goldsboro at Wayne Community College as a reference librarian. I have an opportunity to interview for the Head of a department at Western Carolina University. The people at the community college are great! I drove through the city (goldsboro) and saw what looked like depressed areas. I was told that the economy is mostly based on industry not agriculture.
My cousin lives in Asheville and he told me that Cullowhee is right in the mountains and scenic. There are 3,000 residents and 8,000 students at the university.
I'm trying to make a decision based on the job themselves but the actual environment factors in too. Any other insights you can offer?

Research a lot of previous threads and see how many would love to have a job offer in the Maggie Valley area. It is beautiful. I agree with friendnc that Goldsboro is too hot for me in the summer but it is only fifty miles to Raleigh for shopping and recreation. If you like the outdoors and scenic surroundings Cullowhee will blow you away.

Western Carolina is great. Cullowhee is great too it's actually a postage stamp sized town next to Western.

Another vote for Cullowhee (though I must admit I've never been to Goldsboro). It's beautiful, and you're within minutes of the charming small towns of Sylva, Dillsboro and Waynesville, as well as being close to the national park and other fabulous outdoor activities. And for more of a "big-city" experience, Asheville's only about an hour away.

I would choose Cullowhee also. I've been to Goldsboro several times and it's just an unattractive town, in my opinion. The NC mountains are gorgeous. Just based on atmosphere and appearance, Cullowhee would be the easy choice.
All the best!

'course if you're looking for an active nightlife and kickin' social scene, Cullowhee is not your place to be. I did post-graduate work there, my daughter is a graduate and worked there. LOVED it, but no social scene. She commuted fron Enka (across the street from Asheville) when she worked there, lived on campus as student.
